Possible reaction to nutramigen?

My 7 month old was diagnosed with milk protein intolerance at 5 months old with the key symptoms being severe nappy rash and blood/mucous in his stools. He was put on nutramigen 2 which has been brilliant as all symptoms quickly disappeared.

This week he has been diagnosed with intolerances to both soya and wheat, he last had soya a week ago and wheat four days ago.

Today the cows milk symptoms have reappeared and following a trip to the hospital the doctor on duty suggests its a reaction to the only new food he has had in the last 3 days which is rice milk.

Does anyone having any experience of either such a severe reaction to rice milk or a reaction to nutramigen 2 months after into its use please?

I guess time will tell as to whether this clears up and therefore suggests the former but i would be interested to hear about any other experiences.

Hi Tiger. Sorry your DS is having a bad time.

My DS ia allergic to cows milk and he is on nutramigen 2. He had only had a very little bit of cows milk and had skin rashes. I was still breastfeeding and when I gave up dairy the vomiting he always had cleared up and so did his eczema so I also put that down to the cows milk.

He's been on nutramigen since October but wasn't really drinking all that much until Christmas. Since then I stopped BF and he also got over a series of chest infections and is now drinking 20 - 25oz of nutramigen a day instead of about 6 previously. Sorry, that's a bit longwinded but to get to the point, since Christmas he has also had terrible nappy rash which nothing is clearing and his vomiting is worse again. Am taking him to the doctors about it on Monday but I am wondering whether its a reaction to the nutramigen. It still has a higher level of cows milk in it that something like neocate from what I understand as it is based on cows milk protein whereas neocate is completely synthetic (someone more knowledgeable may correct me on this). So I do think its possible your DS could have reacted to the nuttamigen, even if he had previously been ok. My DS started out ok with soya and can no longer tolerate it.

Re rice milk, I haven't heard of anyone being allergic. However, a main ingredient in it is sunflower oil. Before my DS was tested I was worried he might be allergic to sunflower oil as a baby massage oil which was pure sunflower oil brought him up in a rash. My DS seems fine when I have given him rice milk but its worth bearing in mind it does have ingredients that could cause a reaction.

Hope that helps and sorry its a long reply. I'd also be intersted to hear if anyone else has had reactions to nutramigen.

With dd we were told not to give any other milk substitutes. DD was on neocate which is supposed to be better for children with multiple allergies - might be worth exploring with your consultant?

MissisBoot · 10/01/2009 22:11

Sorry no experience of rice milk allergy though.

My dd broke out in a rash on nutramigen. Neocate was ok for her. I bf and had to cut all dairy from my diet. But, to give a bit of hope, she can now eat dairy without a problem. I don't know how often they grow out of it but it is possible.

Nutramiigen is cow's milk based. My DS came out in hives after only having a mouthful of it.

Neocate doesn't contain any cow's milk so DS wasn't allergic to it, but wouldn't drink it!!

It could also be a reaction to the sunflower oil in the rice milk. You could try oat milk instead assuming he can tolerate gluten.

Thanks for all the replies, thats given me some things to think about. I wasn't aware of the issues around sunflower oil so that is very interesting. I will post and update once we get to the bottom (pardon the pun) of this!!

It's horrible trying to work out what the cause is isn't it?

Is it possible that the nappy rash is due to teething this time if he's been ok up until now?

I went through a period of thinking DS had devloped a wheat allergy only for him to cut his first tooth a coupld of days later.

tigermaj · 11/01/2009 18:24

It is horrible I agree and I am probably too aware of it all now so seeing problems where they don't exist if that makes sense?!

My DD always had a sore bottom when she was teething so it is possible however he also has blood/mucous in his stools again which I wouldn't expect if it was teething.

Oh dear, wishful thinking from me there for you.

Hope it is just the milk protein in nutramigen and not anything else to deal with.
