Red spotty rash after tomatoes and potatoes

Not a biggie I know ...

I have stopped giving tomatoes, as the rash was quite bad. DS (14 months) also gets a slight rash after potatoes too.

After reading previous threads, I understand this is a slight skin reaction to acidity/nightshade veg (I also get itchy hands when I chop up tomatoes, which I guess is similar).

Have others stopped giving ALL nightshade veg/fruit? I am reluctant to stop giving potatoes, as he doesn't like pasta, and I don't want to just give bread as carbohydrate. I am keen to keep giving a little and just try to keep wiping with a wet flannel to limit irritation.

Am I being a mean mum by doing this? Does anyone know, does it hurt or just a skin irritation? Has anyone got advice from Doctor about this type of reaction?

Thanks muchly.

Does he scratch it or look distressed? I'd hold off for a bit if you can - he will grow out of it. I hate to say this on mumsnet but the more processed the potato (i.e. chips / waffles), the less likely a reaction. Same with tomatoes - the more cooked the less reaction.

No distress or scratching whatsoever.
Interesting about it being more processed/cooked, I might try cooking a tomato pasta sauce for ages and try a weeny bit of that with him.
I just worry about all of the salt in bread, if that is the only carb he eats. He isn't too keen on 'dry' rice (but will eat in things like Kedgeree/curry).
He is allergic to eggs too.
What age do they tend to grow out of it?

Hi there, peppers and aubergine are also nightshade family so avoid them.

I have osteoarthritis in my lower back and a nutritional medicine blokey told me to cut out tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and aubergine to see if I had the type that was worsened by it. I couldn't manage the potaoes!! But I think they're they're the least affecting of the family from what I know.

You may also find you/he are only allergic to raw forms of the family, whereas cooked is fine. Trial and error will let you know.

Normally around the age of 2 but obviously it varies hugely!
