Is this an allergy? oris it a protest?

I think it is probably an intolerance at the very least.
do you mind me asking why you are giving him formula?

MrsHappy · 03/01/2009 21:43

to me it sounds like that formula does not agree with your baby. Have you tried a different brand?

NomDePlume · 03/01/2009 21:43

ok, impertinent question alert, but why have you stopped BF ?

Is it possible for you to go back to BF if your baby is struggling with FF ?

Have you tried a different brand of formula ? Some babies just don't like the taste of some brands.

fille · 03/01/2009 21:44

Difficult to tell. Were there any welts around his/her mouth at the same time? Any swelling?

It could be because the flow from the bottle could be a bit fast and baby is drinking too much, but, i'd not have thought this would be as much of a problem in an older baby.

Best to contact your gp really.

DumbledoresGirl · 03/01/2009 21:46

It might be that the hole in the teat is too big and the milk is going in too quickly for the little stomach to cope with. Also, and I don't know if this is true or not, but I was once told that milk is more easily accessed from the bottle than from the nipple so it is easy for babies to take too much. You could try making up slightly less formula and seeing how that goes, or buying a teat with a smaller hole (but then baby might get frustrated?)

But I know nothing about allergies so I could not dismiss that I suppose.

stripeysock · 03/01/2009 21:51

I havn't stopped but need to go back to work as my partner has been made redundant. I dont have any surlus milk to express. I dont think its the bottle because she has taken bottles of expressed milk all along.
She has developed a rash round her mouth.

Right, well, stop with the formula and book an appointment with your GP as soon as possible. You need some expert advice, and possibly referral to an allergy specialist or a paediatrician that specialises in allergies.

You'd probably benefit from seeing a dietician too if your baby has a milk allergy because cows milk protein can be found in many processed food products that you wouldnt expect, and can be known as different things (such as 'whey powder' etc).

Your GP could also prescribe an appropriate cows-milk-free breastmilk substitute if you feel you need it.

That said, the canny thing about breastfeeding is that you can up your supply if you need to. It is possible to do a bit of expressing here and there. Maybe last thing at night or first thing in the morning just before or after first or last feeds, and start stashing supplies of breastmilk in the freezer. Then, for the feeds that you dont give during the day whilst at work, you can express in order to keep up your freezer/fridge stock of milk. Under the circumstances, you'd be better of sticking with breastmilk as long as possible.

When do you have to go back to work?

I go back to college on wed, he will go into a creche for a 5 hr period. I dont want to stop bf altogether but to introduce one f feed so i can express enough for her when i am not there. i am a freelance community artist and there is a degree of flexibility. I will only work one or two days a week from amonths time but long days and i wanted there to be enough breast milk in the freezer for her when i am not about. Is there a good site on dairy intolerence i can gem up on?

I dont think it sounds like intollerance, it sounds like an allergy tbh.

You can get formula milks that are lactose free, or soya milk instead. I'd see your gp first though.

FairLadyRantALot · 05/01/2009 00:00

hm...so, these 8 ff feeds happened over the past 8 days and it was the last 3 that were puked out? If so...your Baby has developed some kind of allergy/intolerance....

I thought she did mention a rash, around her mouth, after feeding, which is why I was more cautious with my response.

stripeysock · 05/01/2009 22:19

hi just to clear up, very first feed ever in hospital was formula as i had no colostrum. DD puked up the filth. then she was entirely bf untill 3 weeks ago. She had formula for 3 days and was fine. She then also had formula 4 more times over the following 2 weeks. she vomited each feed within minutes. she is now however refusing breast milk expressed.
she has a rash round mouth which has appeared in last 5 days. Thanks for the link how do you know yor dc are intolerant to dairy if the test was neg trial an error?
