I have just started weaning DS (he's 6 months & BF). On Christmas Eve he came out in a big, blotchy, hot, red rash all over his face whilst eating at lunch time. It faded but wasn't completely gone until about 12 hours later. Since then every time he eats anything (have tried lots of diff foods) the same thing happens. It starts around the mouth & chin & then spreads over whole face. I took him to the doctor this morning who said to carry on weaning & that he'd grow out of it. I'm not sure I'm totally happy with this as it just looks so awful. (He has a cough & is also teething - not sure if they are factors). Just wondered if anyone else has had any experience of this type of thing?

Hi there

DS has a contact allergy to kiwi that came up a lot like that everywhere the kiwi had been in contact. He also has a 'proper' allergy to strawberry and needs to be given piriton when it happens.

If your DS has a bad reaction again I would see someone else- what are you feeding him?

I would cut right back to a few basic weaning foods, say sweet potato or something or even give it a few days back on milk before starting again with a single puree per day to find out if there is a particular trigger.
Let us know how you get on.

I would agree with heliotrope!! I have 2 DD's the eldest of which is extremely sensitive to lots of basic weaning foods as they contain a naturally occuring food chemical called salicylates. I really wish I had had the opportunity to identify these foods when weaning at 6 months rather than listen to the 'she'll grow out of it rubbish' she's 4 now and hasn't!!

I would go back to milk for a few days, and then re-introduce 1 food at a time for a few days. Then when you are sure its not causing a reaction, try another one!! Start with pears as they are one of the least allergenic foods, along with potatoes. General rule of thumb I have found the stronger the colour of a food, the more likely the reaction. (ie tomatoes, strawberries, kiwi etc)

HTH and let us know how you get on.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I think I will do as you suggest & lay off the food for a few days. I tried to feed him some mushed carrot today but he refused it so I'll give him a break & start again very slowly in a few days. Thanks again for your advice.
