Quick help re allergic reaction

Sorry for posting another message. DS is allergic to milk, eggs and soya. He is on antibiotics for pneumonia, 4th dose, 2nd time he's had the same ones.

Yesttday afternoon his face came up in a red spotty rash kind of like the hives reaction he had to milk. Since then it keeps coming up and down. I can't find anything consistent that could be causing it, I thought tomato on the basis that he ate it before it came up and got lots on his face. But it disappeared and came back up last night, and again this morning and at lunch time. He;s had two lots of piriton but it hasn't made any difference.

Does this sound like an allergy? It looks like one to me. Could it be the ABs? I am taking him into the surgery but should I do anything else? Its been one thing after another and I am very stressed.

it could be. sounds like you are doing the right things though. i presume his breathing is ok? if so, just keep going as you are until you have seen the gp.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 19/12/2008 14:49

If it was the antibiotics wouldn't it come up and stay up/ get worse and if this is the second lot of the same abs, I would have thought he'd have reacted by now.

Although maybe the piriton is keeping it at bay.

As you can tell, I don't have a clue!

Does he get excema? dd's can come and go.

BalloonSlayer · 19/12/2008 14:54

Def go to the GP as quick as possible. Better safe than sorry. It certainly could be the ABs

When my DS1 had chicken pox he had it badly and had hives all over as well. I kept dosing with the piriton but it hardly did a thing.

The Doctor explained that viruses are proteins and allergies are always to proteins. Therefore it is possible to have an allergic reaction to a virus, particularly if you are a very allergic person, which is what happpened to my DS. Poor love, as if Chicken Pox isn't bad enough.

As your DS is on antibiotics I would assume he has not got a virus, but was the pneumonia linked to one?

Just a thought.

BlueBumedFly · 19/12/2008 15:00

Strawberry - as you know DD2 is allergic to nut and DD3 is allergic to penicillin so there is a link between very allergic children and AntiBs. Is it a penicillin based AB he is on?

Poor you, it really is one thing after another eh? Would it be worth calling Dr du Toit to discuss as well? They do encourage you to call about anything out of the ordinary?

Good luck hum, hope the doc can help.

x

strawberrycornetto · 19/12/2008 15:06

Thanks guys. it is penicillin and the pneumonia was linked to bronchiolitis. I will try to ring one of the allergy docs. I swear I am going to have a nervous breakdown if this continues. It has been one thing after another since September. Poor little ds

Hi again. Did you have any luck? I really really sympathise. I almost lost my mind last year when DD was poorly pretty much every other week from September to March, it just did my head in. I thought we had hit the same problem this year but by some miracle she has started to gain an appetite and I think the food is helping to make her system stronger.

Good luck, I really hope you hit a good patch soon. xx Post anytime in allergies, I am always checking that section and am very happy just to listen and poor you a glass of wine.

xx

Thanks so much BBF. I have just got back from A&E and poured myself a glass!! I really don't know what I would have done without the people here.

I called the leap study who said probably a virus not an allergy as only on his face. Went to the GP appointment and she said probably ok its only on his face.

Got home, an hour later, it had spread to his arms, legs and body. So, called the GP back and she sent us to A&E. Doctor said it looks like an allergy, not sure what to, so changed antibiotic in case.

Have been running through in my head what it could have been. I can only think of the ABs, something I ate and came though my milk or tomato, but truth is I really have no idea. I think I am going to stop breast feeding now though in case I am actually making him ill.

I feel so lost with all of this.

Sympathy, Strawberry.

and (((((((hugs)))))))

I have had all this with DS1. You feel like you are going berserk.

I even posted about 9 months ago because DS2 had had what I knew was an allergic reaction and I was so . Since then he has been allergy tested and is apparently not allergic to anything. Fab ! Halleluia! But I know what I saw at the time...

The time I have been nearest to using DS1's epipen was an occasion when we were out. He reported a funny feeling in his mouth (!) then 5 mins later threw up. We bundled him into the car and started driving the 10 mins home. He immediately came out in hives and was screaming in distress (he was about 6; hives didn't distress him like that when he was younger). He was rubbing his face which was making his lips swell a bit. I had no idea what had caused it and thought: this is it, I will have to use the epipen and I don't know what bloody for!

At this point DD threw up.

She is not allergic to anything.

That stopped us in our tracks. We treated DS1 with piriton and a cold flannel at home and he was fine. Still have no idea what caused it for either of them.

I don't want to make you think you don't have to go to the doctors - in fact I would recommend you contact your GP at every bad reaction.

But I wanted to sympathise and say that when you have a very allergic child you may well find that you get this sort of reaction from time to time and maddeningly you may not always know what has caused it.

So my advice is, still ask the doctor each time, but don't keep blaming yourself or your breastmilk, there can be so many different things that cause these reactions.

strawberrycornetto · 19/12/2008 22:07

Thanks. I know there are not necessarily answers, it is maddening, you are so right. Feel really down about it tonight, probably because DH is away and I;m on my own and so tired and feel so responsible for all of it. To be fair, DS was the least ill child in the hospital this evening and I suspect the only one who got to go home, so we should feel grateful.

I also know what you mean about the tests. DS only tested as minorly allergic to milk the first time. Second time, more allergic to milk and also eggs, even though the tests were only weeks apart. The blood tests were negative for everything, yet I know he's also reacted to soya. They seem very unreliable and it just makes me feel more confused about the whole thing.

I really mean it when I say that you guys here have kept me sane. THANK YOU

please don't stop breastfeeding because you think it's causing his problems. if you want to stop for other reasons go ahead but it's much more likely the antibiotic was a problem or that he was more suscepitble to things that wouldn't normally bother him because he was ill.

Antibiotics will change the type of bacteria in his gut. Breastfeeding helps keep healthy bacteria there but probiotics would do instead.

Also some carrot puree wouldn't do any harm. Some people think the vitamin A helps the immune system.

It's hard having a child with allergies but it sounds as though you are really looking after him well. Pat yourself on the back and if there is anyone would could come in and give you time for a soak in the bath give them a call!

strawberrycornetto · 20/12/2008 12:30

Thanks Tatt. Good idea about the carrots. We have some lovely organic ones so he can have some for tea.

My mum is coming, am hoping for a shower!

Not sure about breastfeeding, I feel like I keep getting it wrong with dairy free and I'd feel less worried if I stopped, but then I also know bf is good for him while he's sick.

If it cheers you at all, Strawberry, when my DS1's allergies were first diagnosed I was gripped with utter terror.

He could never go to anyone else's house as a) they were too scared to invite him and b) I was too scared to let him out of my sight.

He is 8.5 and as allergic as ever. Last night he went to his first sleepover at a friends! And I was totally OK with it. Well, all right, I did dial 1471 in the middle of the night just in case they'd phoned us and I hadn't heard the phone. But I am OK with it.

If you had told me this seven years ago I don't think I would have believed you.
