I have just started weaning my 6 month and yesterday we tried Boots Organic porridge made with breast milk & banana. DD has been fully breast fed up until now and has eaten banana several times in last week with no reaction. Within about 3 mins of eating some of the porridge he came out in a red rash with small raised bumps whereever the porridge had touched his face. It cleared up very quickly too and he was not unduly upset by it although a bit out of sorts for the rest of the day.

Is this more likely to have been caused by the cows milk powder or the gluten in the product? I was planning on trying him out on dairy and gluten foods separately so see if there is any reaction is this wise and should I wait a bit? Anything else I should be concerned about as feel very wary now and worried I might get a more severe reaction with something else

is it this one?

if so i would say it's more likely to be the milk. there isn't very much gluten in oats

i would try them separately and see what happens.

yes it was that one. I was wondering about the maize in it as its quite high on the ingredients list do you know if it has a lot of gluten in it?

no, maize has no gluten.

maize is gluten free.

all baby cereal should be wheat/rye/barley gluten free, but usually contain oats. Oat gluten is different from the other types in that it doesn't trigger the same immune response, however really sensitive coealics should avoid it as there is usually some degree of contamination due to the way oats are harvested and processed.

I'm not sure that oat gluten would cause a contact rash like that though, so would suspect the milk.

thanks for the advice. I was thinking of trying yoghurt. Do you think I should delay it till hes a bit older or try it out sooner to perhaps gauge the reaction? if I do try are those organic first fruit yoghurts ok or should I try basic natural yoghurt?

yoghurt might be a good idea as I think i read that it is "sometimes" less allergenic than straightforward milk.

i would just offer anything that is sugar free.
