Lactose intolerance (temp) - terrible cramps on SMA LF: any advice, or else where to buy Neocate a little cheaper?

After course of antibiotics, my ds developed temporary lactose intolerance (diarrhea, wind etc). Paed (while on holiday) prescribed lactose free milk. GP here then prescribed SMA Lactose free. Whilst that stopped his runny tummy, he gets terrible stomach cramps and wind from that - so much so that he screams blue murder all night, arching his back etc etc.

Have gone back to gp, who said that she can't prescribe anything else, as she thought the SMA LF would work. Now waiting to see paed (going private) next week. Any ideas about what to do in the meantime? Currently I'm using soya, but have read it's bad for boys and for their teeth. Do you think it's worth buying Neocate directly, and if so, where would we find it - can't see in any shops. I could try ordering through chemist, but hoped there was a cheaper alternative (online perhaps?)

Thanks.

Hi twinklingtrace, sorry to hear about dd. Is she better now?

Let me wait until after Friday - ds can stay on soya until then at least, and paed might (hopefully) prescribe it anyway. If not, I might ask you for it again. Thanks so much for the offer.

Sal - how did you get on with appt today?

Paed was very nice. He suggested we keep him on soya as that currently works best for him. He said to make sure we include a little bit of lactose in his diet (as part of his meals) to ensure his body can still process it a little. In 4 weeks we are to substitute one spoon of soya with "normal" formula and if all goes well, to increase that very slowly over the following weeks.

He said that Neocate or Nutrimigen might work too, but that he'd recommend not changing now unless necessary. So fingers crossed that he doesn't start hating soya! Thanks for all the support.
