what other formulas are there next to nutramigen? Advice needed before seeing paediatrician?

ds2 is 3.4 weeks old and is on nutramagen due to dairy intolerance. Ds1 is allergic to dairy and intollerant to soya and egg and he ended up me putting him on nanny goat milk as none of the 'hydrolysed' formulas seemed to help. Seeing paediatrician tomorrow for ds2 as he has reflux (like ds1 did) anyway he is better on this milk but still has problems with wind, getting stuck. ds1 had this problem and would cause alot of pain, nbever burped, always out of his bottom end and interferes with sleep.

Anyway im not 100%the milk is the best for him as end of the day it does still have dairy/soya in it. I know there is neocate which is 'human made' no dairy/soya but apparantly the taste is vile. What other options are there?

my dd was on SMA LF, dont know if that would be appropriate but it tasted more like normal formula than nutramigen which i can still re,member the smell of and she is 5yo.

the lactose free you mean? I remember trying ds1 on that and he couldnt have it. I think thats soya based isnt it? gp told me they wont prescribe soya milk (not that i espectially want it) i just dont know if its the 'hydrolysed' dairy or soya in the nutramigen that is causing probs but without trying various diff i guess i wont know, i just dont want to be swapping milk too many times..

It was definatley not soya based as dd allergic to soya, I think it was hydrolysed dairy.

DD was on neocate and I think it was more palateable than nutrimigen - she loved it and used to guzzle it down - now I'm trying to wean her onto cows milk as she is no longer allergic. I managed to wean dd onto neocate after bf for 9 months - I think at 3 weeks it should be quite straightforward to get her used to the taste.

She was originally given nutrimigen and then it was changed to neocate after about a month as its supposed to be better for those with multiple allergies or high risk of anaphylaxis.

My DD has neocate mixed with neocate advance (has more calories). Not sure on taste as my DD is tube fed but apparently tastes better with a bit of icing sugar in it - as advised by the dietician! One bad thing about neocate is the smell if your DS is sick a lot with the reflux...

mad4mybaby · 14/12/2008 20:54

does my dscome under that 'high risk of allergies' because of ds1? also intollerances in family

ds1 projectile all the time but ds2 its silent reflux thankfully

It was because she displayed a high allergy result on the pin prick tests at the allergy clinic. You'll have to wait til 6 months to have this don't but I'm sure it won't do him any harm to have it from now.

DD changed to neocate advance when she turned one.

mad4mybaby · 14/12/2008 21:04

hmm. Maybe its work trying if paed oks it. Then maybe when hes a bit bigger could see if he tolerates soya...

There's also pepti junior.

jasperc163 · 16/12/2008 19:03

DD was also changed from Nutramigen to Neocate. Now aged 3 she is still drinking Neocate Advance. As far as taste goes, it is a matter of what they are used to. DD thinks normal milk is yukky.....

cuppachar · 17/12/2008 15:28

DD (14 months) is allergic to cows milk and we get soya milk on prescription from the GP. She loves it and has suffered no adverse effects luckily.

mad4mybaby · 17/12/2008 20:41

ds has been put on neocate... will have to see how that goes...
