please could anyone help. I have just given my 10 month old some pieces of well cooked omlette for the first time and he almost immediately developed hives that look like stinging nettle rash around his left eye and ear. He is rubbing his eyes like mad and is uncomfortable. I don't know what to do - our GP surgery is closed on Thursdays. Can anyone advise ? Will it go down of its own accord or does he need to see someone ?

I wouldnt hesitate-take him to A & E a.s.a.p
sounds like a bad reaction to me.

SatsumaMoon · 11/12/2008 12:28

If you've got any Pirotin in the house give him some - should ease the symptoms and in some cases can also reduce the risk of a child actually developing a severe allergic reaction

coveredinsnot · 11/12/2008 12:35

Call NHS direct or go straight to the hospital, just to be sure. As long as his breathing is ok I wouldn't worry though. I'm sure he will be fine.

Catilla · 11/12/2008 12:39

Def Piriton... if it doesn't subside in a few minutes go to A&E, if it does, go to doc when you can for follow-up

Look out for him becoming floppy/sleepy - a sign of lowered blood pressure which is common in egg allergy - again Piriton can perk them up v quickly.

LisaJasper · 11/12/2008 12:40

My little one has a mild egg allergy, and had a very similar reaction to yours, I took him to the hospital as I paniced, but he was fine as it was just a skin reaction. He has had some egg since (although only in other foods) and only has very mild reactions like redness around the eyes. If you are worried though go straight to A&E.

misdee · 11/12/2008 12:40

piriton is for 1yr olds+

can u get to a walk in clinic or a+e?

Picante · 11/12/2008 12:40

I wouldn't worry too much. Hives are not an anaphalactic reaction - you need to look out for swelling. Any swelling call an ambulance.

Picante · 11/12/2008 12:41

I've given my ds piriton under advice from gp when he was under 1 year.

misdee · 11/12/2008 12:43

so have i, but was on gp's advice.

evenmoremiserablethanbefore · 11/12/2008 12:47

I would go to A & E, just to be on safe side...
let us know how you get on.
My daughter was stung on the lip aged 10 months and when I took her to A & E,they said I was right to bring her....you just never know.
Her lip had trebled in size and she had a rash all down her neck, although her breathing was ok,its still worrying

DesperateHousewifeToo · 11/12/2008 13:04

As long as no swelling, I would just give piriton and keep and eye on him.

How is he now?

DontlookatmyNoseImRudolph · 11/12/2008 13:11

Sounds like the reaction ds1 had when he first had egg. All over his face and round his mouth. The rash slowly disappeared but about half and hour later he threw up quite violently. About 4 hours later he started getting a rash all over his body but disappeared again within a couple of hours,.

thequietone · 11/12/2008 13:13

Same reaction to my DS1. Given scrambled eggs at nursery at 10 months. Had to collect him as he was "not himself". Got home and was very violently sick a few times. After it was out of his system he was fine.

He's not had eggs as a main ingredient since.

aideesmum · 11/12/2008 13:15

Go to A&E, don't wait to see if the symptoms get worse - my ds reacts that quickly too and is severly allergic

MegBusset · 11/12/2008 13:16

DS had the same reaction around 9mo. Gave Piriton and it went down after half an hour or so. He has since tested positive for egg allergy although he seems fine with stuff with cooked egg in like cake, in small quantities.

As long as his breathing is OK and the hives subside, I would just take to the GP and ask to be referred for allergy testing.

fairywave · 11/12/2008 13:18

I would also advise to go to A&E just in case. Any update? - let us know how you get on.

Toppy · 11/12/2008 13:21

whew - thank you so much for all of your replies. since posting I have been on the phone to NHS direct and once I got through the 'health advisor's' 120 questions spoke to a very calming nurse who talked me through it.
The rash has started to go down and he is now having a nap and I have the baby monitor on full volume to monitor breathing as the nurse said full allergic reaction can take up to two hours. He seems pretty happy now - chatting to himself.
It was a truly horrid half hour. I def overreacted but was really scared. Very useful to know about Piriton. At 10 months our knowledge of baby medicine is still limited to Calpol so I shall get some in the house for future emergencies as it is likely he will be allergic to something else. He has bad eczema and I suffered terribly in childhood from asthma, eczema and allergies.

thank you all again

plantsitter · 11/12/2008 13:22

Doesn't sound like you overreacted. Scary. Glad all seems ok.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 11/12/2008 13:39

I think piriton is a useful thing to have in your cupboard.

Your ds may not be allergic to other things but at least you know about the possible egg reaction.

Would he have had any other food that could have contained egg before - cake, pasta, etc?

My ds can't eat anything with egg in at all )as well as some nuts) and it is not too bad to deal with.

Glad he's happy again!

evenmoremiserablethanbefore · 11/12/2008 17:36

Glad he was ok
I dont think you overreacted at all....
rashes that develop very quick are VERY frightening. And,with babies who cant tell you exactly how they are feeling, you have to trust your instincts sometimes.
My daughter {bee sting} has since been diagnosed with Asthma.
I have sinusitis,hay fever & allergies to dust,cheap perfumes,cats and dogs....
Asthma is in hubbys side of the family,so poor little mite ,might end up with many allergies too as they tend to go hand in hand.
I never thought of having Piriton medicine in the house...must buy some.I,m on tablet form, but desperatehousewive is right about it being handy for kiddies
Merry Xmas

Toppy · 12/12/2008 10:38

Update - after my last post my ds started coughing and wheezing in his cot which I monitored and attributed to a hangover of his cold and him being a bit miserable from the hives.
He finally conked out at 3pm and woke at 5pm. When I brought him downstairs I noticed that his ears were really puffy and swollen so I quickly undressed him and he had a huge red continous rash all over his body that was raised and puffy. I felt so guilty and a bit panicky so I bundled him into the car and over to A&E where they gave him a big dose of antihistamine.
Really scary - NHS direct were right in that the full effect can take a couple of hours to develop. I hope our experience might help someone else when they come to search for egg allergy threads. I should have taken him earlier but just thought it was calming down.

OP posts:
SatsumaMoon · 12/12/2008 12:23

Sorry to hear he was so badly affected - that is why Piriton is recommended as it can prevent the full-blown reaction which often means a long-term allergy to a substance...
