DS is getting bored with pureed fruit! Does anyone know if you can give babies Alpro soya yoghurts? Or are there other alternatives?

Also how neurotic should I be about introducing new foods - DH just scared me off giving DS avocado for tea!

My DD2 was brought up on soya formula, alpro soya yoghurts and she was fine! She was found to be intolerant to lactose at about 3mths of age. Alpro yogs are lovely and are absolutely safe to give at such a young age. It was actually our Health Visitor who suggested it.

mrsdisorganised · 25/11/2008 18:58

Hi, I gave my DD4 Alpro at around 9 months and she has been on rice milk and soya products ever since, I don't think it matters, but check with your health visitor if you're unsure. I was a bit neurotic about peanut butter, for obvious reasons, but aside from that baby had what we had for dinner except mashed or pureed! Oh and avocados are fantastic! Don't stress too much.

thisisyesterday · 25/11/2008 19:02

you CAN give soya yoghurts, but bear in mind they tend to be pretty high in sugar compared to baby friendly dairy yoghurts. that's one reason why we have steered clear of them for ds2.

if you have a nearby healthfood shop you can sometimes get a plain version of a soya yoghurt, alpro do one, also sojade and another brand.
just add pureed fruit.
ds2 also eats jelly, and we sometimes make up fruit salads.

or more traditional puds made dairy free (steamed pud, apple pie etc)

kalo12 · 25/11/2008 19:09

hipp organic make a banana rice pudding which is dairy free . its stage one. my ds loves it, infact he only eats this and oven chips at 9 months.

thisisyesterday · 25/11/2008 19:15

oooooooooh kalo! really? that might be just the thing for quick puds. thanks for the tip-off!

what do they make it with if not milk thoughj??

kalo12 · 25/11/2008 19:19

its just bananas and rice and some ascorbic acid to stop the bananas going brown, but it seems very creamy, my ds doesn't even like mashed bananas but loves this.

I buy about ten jars at once so if its out of stock in your supermarket you must live near me!

Isn't dairy free a bloody nightmare. I'm not too keen on soya cos of all the bad press re boys and soya etc, but i'm neurotic

thisisyesterday · 25/11/2008 19:19

ahh just found it. fruit with some baby rice in?

thisisyesterday · 25/11/2008 19:20

kalo, yes I agree about the soya, we only have it rarely when I am getting bored of the fruit purees.

what I actually need to do is make stuff like rice pudding with oat/rice milk in bulk and freeze portions of it

ellymae · 25/11/2008 19:48

some babies who are allergic to cows milk (as opposed to being lactose intolerant) are also allergic to soya milk as well so just keep an eye out for any symptons if you give your DS soya yoghurts.

umm, will have a think about other types of pudding although to be honest my 20 month old DD (who is allergic to dairy - but not soya fortunately) is very fussy and that bit older so things I can get her to eat might not be appropriate for you

kalo12 · 25/11/2008 19:58

yesterday - tell me how to make a dessert like that - i'm thinking of a vanilla and cinnamon something

thisisyesterday · 25/11/2008 20:01

just buy some pudding rice or flaked rice from supermarket and follow instructions on pack, but using your own choice of milk! flaked rice is a lot quicker, you can do it on the hob in about 20 mins
and yes, adding vanilla and cinnamon is a good idea too.
I did one once and added pureed strawberry which was nice.
I just need some better freezer pots to store it in

kalo12 · 25/11/2008 20:02

coolio - ta very much. (i'm rubbish at cooking)

trixymalixy · 25/11/2008 20:24

Just be careful with giving soya, my DS has now developed a soya allergy as well as his other allergies.

A lot of babies who are allergic to dairy will also be allergic to soya as the proteins are similar.

kalo12 · 25/11/2008 20:29

i've been thinking my ds is becoming allergic to soya actually. What about eating it myself and breastfeeding?

What do you give to eat trixy?

i'm giving meat and veg mush and oven chips at every meal,
but really feel he's not getting enough efas
he won't eat avocado

cheesesarnie · 25/11/2008 20:35

why did he scare you off avacado?
umm i cant remember-will think.
my ds was intolernt to cows milk produce but was fine on goats stuff.we went through the whole soya/rice milk thing.

i just adapted recipes to suit him.hes veggie too so it was case of having to.

how about trying some veg?
i dont think ds had anything sweet-including fruit for ages.

trixymalixy · 25/11/2008 21:40

Kalo, i would be wary of drinking soya yourself and bfing. have you tried oat milk?

My DS loves salmon, but can't remember what age you can introduce fish.

Lizziejo, you could try mixing avocado with banana. Can't see why you would have to avoid avocado.

My Ds loved sweet potato at this age. an easy thing to do is to put the whole unpeeled sweet potato in the microwave for 5 mins and scoop out the inside.

buternut squash is also really easy. slice it in half lengthways, drizzle with olive oil, roast in the oven for 45 mins and scoop out the inside.

trixymalixy · 25/11/2008 21:41

allergic weaning schedule

lizziejo · 25/11/2008 22:04

Thanks for all the ideas, it will be nice to give him something else for a change. And I?ll definitely try the Hipp ones and jelly is a good idea.

And I ignored my DH and gave DS the avocado for tea and he loved it!

Now starting to worry about soya allergy as well as I am still bf. I'll have to test him on a soya yoghurt and see what happens.

Kalo12 - I?m not sure what the issue is with soya and boys - is it proven?

OP posts:
strawberrycornetto · 25/11/2008 23:30

I have been told not to worry about the boy/soya thing because my DS is over 6 months old. However, he does seem to be allergic to soya yogurts too unfortunately. I am also going to try the rice puddings, that'a an excellent idea, thanks yesterday

cheesesarnie · 25/11/2008 23:35

soya

heliotrope · 26/11/2008 12:48

Another quick pud: Custard made with birds powder, and your choice of milk.

Zach 15 months has soya everything (formula, alpro yogs, tofutti cream cheese), the dietician and doctors aren't worried about this. I do worry too and don't know what to make of the supposed links. Children in China etc eat soya as basic diet and don't suffer infertility etc.

kalo12 · 26/11/2008 15:41

soya in asian diets is fermented soya and not the same thing at all apparently.

i have just bought a plum baby blueberry banana and vanilla no dairy no gluten pot

(blueberries are not allergenic like strawberries/raspberries/blackberries btw)

thisisyesterday · 26/11/2008 19:27

the plum baby summer puds are really nice.
but obv have stuff like strawbs in. thankfully ds2 has never had a reaction to any fruit.
