Eczema and sugar??

Hi everyone,

I have a little patch of what looks like eczema between my fingers and a nutritionist friend told me recently that cutting out sugar/sweeteners completely should clear it up.

Before I go making drastic changes to my diet (am loathe to move away from the cake tin unnecessarily ) can I ask if any of you have heard of a connection between eczema and sugar, or have tried cutting out sugar and/or sweetners with any success?

hi generally it is because of wheat and dairy, but wheat predominately, you could try a diet elimination on wheat and sugar for two weeks see if it clears up[which it will] you can then introduceit again slowly....
it could also be caused by additive in your diet..... maybe now is the time to record what you eat and look at all the ingredients carefully, sugar is anything with ose at the end, too much yeast isnt good either..

its usually dairy. I know sugar makes epilepsy worse but not sure about skin conditions. I supose its possible.
Are you run down? Unhealthy diet?

therealsupergirl · 19/11/2008 19:35

I think I have a pretty healthy diet apart from the odd cake/biscuit/chocolate/crunchie bar ice cream... have lots of veggies anyway!

I am bf though so maybe have run down my nutrient supplies a bit?

I very much doubt a little patch of exzema has anything to do with foods.
If it's between your fingers it could be caused by soaps, washing up liquid. When I had exzema on my hands it was hormonal and would appear the same time every month. Stress can always cause it.
It's not sugar that can affect epilepsy it is fluctuation in sugar levels that is the problem.

I'll try your suggestion pushkar for 2 weeks and see what happens.

And, thinking about it, I do wash my hands an awful lot more since having DS what with nappy changes etc but didn't think it could be soap as we just have plain fragrance free baby soap - but might try something different for a while as well.

Thanks to all of you for your replies.

if you think it might be the soap just try using a moisturiser several times a day -that might be all it takes

but in my exp dairy is a major cause of eczema and have never heard of sugar being suggested!

good for you the real super girl also try buying soaps shampoos with no laureth sulphate as this is an irritant! to be found in jason products and some other products in fresh and wild and other organic stores, read the labels, there is also [if it gets bad] an enzymes called peptyzides from mandimart.com which breaks down the protein in gluten and casein allows you to eat wheat, but i would try the elimimation first, try not to use chemicals that irritate you ecover has wheat protein so don't use that especially the washing up liquid!

pushkar · 20/11/2008 19:55

p.s. excema is completely associated with foods
christy whisty.........

loobeylou · 20/11/2008 21:24

hijack alert - pushkar- are you sure about ecover having wheat in it? It says it has milk whey but does not mention wheat, and I am panicing now that I should not be using it as DD is coeliac!

christywhisty · 20/11/2008 21:52

It is not always food, eczema can be caused by so many reasons, food is one, stress another, as i said even hormones and allergies to soaps etc
A small patch on a hand sounds far more like a contact dermatitis/eczema than a food allergy.
