Suggestions for calcium rich snacks please for cow milk allergy 1 yr old

I have just stopped bfing my 1 year old but he refuses to drink milk out of a bottle or a cup. He has an allergy to cow's milk but is ok with goats.

He's happy to have a very milky porridge for breakfast and I can add feta cheese to meals/sandwiches and he'll have a soya yoghurt daily.

I'm not sure if he's getting enough calcium.

Can anyone help please?

Apparently kiwi fruit is full of calcium

bouncingblueberries · 19/11/2008 10:06

Oranges have more calcium than a glass of milk apparently

Thats good to know - thanks.

Any more ideas please? I have a very hungry 1yr old!
Any recipes for baked snacks would be useful too.

make custard and cheesey sauce for pouring over veggies using soya milk/goat cheese?

Salmon and sardines: mush and use as sandwich spread

Tofu cubed, in miso soup or soft tofu mashed with any fruit or veg to make it creamy

Collard greens
Spinach
Turnip greens
bok choy
All the above can be steamed and pureed with potato and seasoned to make soup
Or just steam, chop or puree and add to batter to make pancakes or muffins

White beans/Baked beans mush and use as dip with breadsticks or seasoned sandwich spread

Okra
Broccoli
Peas
Brussel sprouts
Are usually less palatable for kids but hey try, some kids love them.

Sesame seeds, Just sprinkle on anything you bake

Almonds: mill and add powder to cookie dough when baking biscuits

Calcium-fortified breakfast cereal are a great snack on the go

Calcium-fortified orange juice

Calcium-fortified soy milk

Instant oatmeal

Calcium-fortified bread

Calcium-fortified drink mixes such as Pediasure

Ditto everything Slim says. I would also add tahini, either in hoummous or as a spread/dip on its own, with or without lemon juice.

Most pulses are rich in calcium, so not only white beans but lentils, chick peas etc. If you soak them overnight you can grind them up and use them like flour to make pancakes and the like, which may be easier to get down a toddler. Or to save time and hassle you could even just buy gram flour (chick pea flour).

Also, any amount of ground up nuts and seeds, sprinkled on cereal, made up into a nut butter with oil. I usually grind up a mixture of almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews/brazil nuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds and sprinkle a sponful or 2 on DD's porridge or Weetabix. This mixture also goes into any cakes, biscuits or flapjacks I make.

Tinned sardines are very high in calcium. Mash them and put in sandwich. Yum!

Thanks so much for all those ideas!

I've got sesame seeds at home and have just added those to a loaf of bread. I've also discovered my breadmaker can make a milk loaf so I'll be trying that.

I'll get some nuts and grind them up and add to muffins.

Will get some tofu, sardines and more greens.

Brangelina do you have a recipe for pancakes made from gram flour, please? I've made bhajis/pakoras with them but thats about it.

I'll dig one out when I get home tonight. IIRC it's just gram flour, water, a tiny bit of butter, chopped onions and a teaspoon of cumin. I also have some other Indian pancake recipes using black eyed beans or split peas and rice, ground up with garlic and ginger. They're totally vegan but taste like egg when cooked and warm. My DD gobbled them up, much to my surprise.

Brangelina · 19/11/2008 12:14

Here's one recipe If you don't have any rice flour you can just grind up uncooked basmati.

This is a very simple recipe

A bit spicier

Thank you! They look great.
