Is my Ds allergic/intolerant to eggs or is this just a 'toddler thing'. Any thoughts appreciated!

Ds aged 2 has become quite picky with his food of late, but as he quite likes aggs I have been giving them to him quite often, probably three to four times a week, as have always understood they are full of protein/vits etc.

A while ago (before he was picky with food (!) I notivec that after having eggs a few days running he developed a very obvious red rash (actually like he had been burnt with very defined edges) after eating an egg, so didnt give them again for a while and thought no more of it. the rash disappeared after about three or four hours as I recall.

Anyhow, no probs until last weekend when the same thing happened again! have also noticed that he gets this rash after eating most 'sauces' ie tomato sauce or mayo and as he doesn't need those foods (lol!) haven't given them, but it struck me those have eggs in too.

I am not overly worried IYKWIM but am really not sure if I should be trying to exclude eggs and egg containing products, or if this is just one of those funny toddler things to be ignored. I know nothing about allergies and any advice woulod be appreciated.

actually DS4 has the very same 'rash' when eating some sauces (ketchup is fine), but the ones like the sweet and sour cause the red mark where its touched him. I havent noticed any other rash or obvious reaction to anything else at all.

Sorry i dont have any advice, but i watch the thread with interest.

ds1 has an egg allergy and we noticed it first as a rash around his mouth after eating scrambled eggs. he had a big plate of eggs again a couple of days later, seemed fine then developed a reaction a couple of hours later - red rash all over his body, swollen wrists and ankles, got quite scary.

it sounds like it could be a mild allergic reaction. not sure what the current advice is on 'testing' so i too will watch with interest - sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon!

Its a tricky one notflorence to find the difference between an annoying intolerance tht DS will grow out of versus an allergy that may get worse if ignored.

DD3 used to vomit on eggs but can now tolerate them in cakes and when used to bind things like home-made burgers. She had scratch tests and they came up negative so I can now freely give them to her, that is if I can get them passed her clamped jaws!! I think that the body knows when something is not right for you you know.

She also gets eczema from pasta (durum wheat) although the allergist refuses to believe me. I took her off pasta in August and her eczema is gone, completely. Will try it again when she is over 2 and see what happens as all other wheats are fine seemingly.

How about you exclude for a minimum or 2 weeks and keep a food diary. If there is no reaction once the eggs are excluded for 2 weeks try again, a small amount and see if the rash comes back. If so you have clear evidence there maybe an intolerance and you can ask your doc to have him tested.

I would never ever suggest trying this with an allergen that a child was severely allergic too but if you are confident the rash is not getting worse with each additional serving then maybe try the exlusion test?

If you are in any way alarmed that this is getting worse then you need to remove all eggs and see the doc for a test.

Asicsgirl - that does sound quite alarming, I would ask your doc for a referral to an allergist to make sure you know what you are dealing with.

Fingers crossed they grow out of these intolerances/allergies but I am of the thought process that you cannot be too careful with these things.
