Am I right in thinking (wheat/rye/gluten Q)

From what I have read over the last couple of days there is more gluten in wheat than any of the other grains.

Therefore if DS was showing signs of being intolerant to wheat and therefore went on a wheat free diet to see whether he was still intolerant to gluten in rye or barley he would have to eat a substantially larger amount of these than wheat to get a reaction?

I think this is where we have gone wrong...

If he is intolerant to gluten, according to the coeliac society he could be classed as a coeliac, he then shouldnt eat all of the above as well as oats.

Wheat does have more than the above, but it is possible to be wheat intolerant but not gluten intolerant.

Is he still getting symptoms?

It can take months for a wheat allergy/intolerance to stop causing problems after cutting it out.

Maybe try cutting them all out and then re-introduce one at a time after a week and see if there is any reaction.

Thank noonki

He was diagnosed as wheat intolerant/allergic (paed couldn't make his mind up which) June of last year and the paediatrician kept saying he thought it was gluten as well and I kept saying it wasn't it was just wheat but recently DS is wheat free and is still getting diarrhoea and symptoms so looked into what gluten he was having and its just happened some days he's eaten more than others.

Just trying to get my thoughts straight before I go back to paed.

Oats are a bit of a "grey area" (my dh is coeliac) Coeliac UK (formerly known as the Coeliac Society) say that a lot of coeliacs can tolerate oats, but they must be from a non contaminated source (e.g not milled in the same mill as wheat etc)

I have no idea if there is significantly more gluten in rye or barley compared to wheat. My understanding (which may be completely wrong) is that barley and rye are generally eaten in far smaller quantities than wheat in this country.

onepiece - That is interesting about Oats I will have to investigate - I miss my porridge!

If you can get hold of any back issues of "Crossed Grain" then I have read several studies about a small amount of non contaminated oats daily being ok for most adult coeliacs. Also there may be info on the Coeliac UK website.

Dh isn't bothered about oats, afaik he has never had porridge or flapjacks etc (diagnosed as a baby)
