Both parents with penicillin allergy - what about child?

GP wants to give DD penicillin although some other consultants we've had have refused to prescribe it because DH and I both had child-allergic reactions (red facial swelling).

Is this a good idea?! What should we look out for?

a new GP

Twiglett · 21/10/2008 15:08

here

morningpaper · 21/10/2008 15:08

GP has a good reputation

trouble is, DD keeps getting chest infections and is sick on ethromycin

so her options are limited

he should be skin-testing before wildly prescribing

GPs are generalists and a large proportion are stupid. Listen to your consultants and refuse to have penicilln there are plenty other anti-bs

Twiglett · 21/10/2008 15:11

is she on becotide?

why does she keep getting chest infections .. is it the same one recurring?

how are you boosting her immune system? pre / pro-biotics

morningpaper · 21/10/2008 15:12

well there AREN'T really that many except ones that basically remove all biological matter from your body and leave a pile of dust (or something)

she's had a week on ethromycin and is still ill

OP posts:
morningpaper · 21/10/2008 15:13

She doesn't eat much and has multiple allergies to dust mites yada yada yada so is basically a bit feeble

Twiglett · 21/10/2008 15:15

I had 5 courses of anti-bs once for a chest infection .. it was horrible .. the last 2 courses were 10 days of the dust-inducing one .. I wouldn't recommend it

morningpaper · 21/10/2008 15:19

Well we will give it a go and I'll report back!

can't he do skin-test first?

worley · 21/10/2008 15:39

both dp and i are allergic to it but ds1 is fine, he has never had any problems,
ds2 though IS allergic to penicillin and erythromycin. he is currently on cefradine which has been fine. (he also has a milk allergy so wether its related i dont know)

morningpaper · 23/10/2008 08:49

In the end they gave it to her in the hospital and watched her for the first half an hour before sending her home. She was fine with it.

OP posts:
WitchWorley · 27/10/2008 19:23

thats good, i often worry what they would give ds2 if he was really ill as he is allergic to 3 antibiotics.
how is your dd doing now?

morningpaper · 28/10/2008 11:21

Thanks for asking!

She has stopped having fevers but still has a bad cough - she had xrays which showed pneumonia.

(I now have a chippie in laying laminate in all the upstairs bedrooms and she's gone to my mothers for a couple of days, because I keep being told to get rid of the carpets! Argh!)

I think you inherite the allergy tendancy, but not the actual allergies theselves.

do you or partner have any other atopic disease, such as asthma, ezcema?

if you do it increases chances of having allergies.

of course penicillin comes from mould, so if you are asthmatic and have more problems during the autumn that would link together.

try the books, 'the complete guide to food allergy and intolerance, by proff brostoff, published by Gamlin books.

explains most things in a easy to understand way.
