8 week baby prescribed hydrocortisone cream and nizoral shampoo for excema

please help, have been on this site before as my baby developed red rash on both cheeks from around 5 weeks. dr diagonosed it as excema. used liquid paraffin and almond oil on it which did help but has come back.

saw dr today who now says it is seborrheic dermatitis (my baby also has since developed a little cradle cap on his head) and that it is all linked. prescribed hydrocortisone cream and nizoral shampoo (ketraconozole). But pharmacist queried both as said are both very strong expecially hydrocortisone cream and not ideal in a baby and on the face...

any advice would really help as feel the dr's are sometimes so quick to prescribe and don't want my baby to just be a trial for different drugs, especially if they could make things worse...

thanks in advance,

ds1 had the most awful weeping eczema when he was a baby. We had to use 1% hydrocortizone but as soon as it had cleared up we transferred to Aveeno oat cream which as far as I'm concerned is a miracle cream. Beware nut based products. I'm sure there is a link, ds1 also has a severe peanut allergy.

i'd really use what you have been prescribed. I tried all different things with my dd to try to avoid using steroids, and jsut wasted a lot of time and money whilst her excema got worse and spread over her face.

Whern I eventually resorted to the steroid cream, it cleeared up immediately. After that, not using soap on her skin would keep flare ups away. She washed with aqueos cream until she was school aged, and now has grown otu of it.

We also had the nizoral, when she was a bit older, becuase of severe cradle cap that wasn't clearing up, and causing bald patches. that was also very good.

actually there is a link - using nut oil-based creams on eczematous babies is the only thing shown consistently by the research so far to be linked to nut allergies later in life

Someone said on here that using Aqueous is not reccommended could I ask why?

I have used it to bathe my son and as a moisturiser for his severe eczema for the last year and it has cleared up fab!

We had to use steroid cream on his face a few times because it had gotten quite badly infected along with several anti biotics, blood tests for allergies and many, many trips to the HV/Doctors/allergy specialist and dermatologist please don't leave it untreated and try not to worry about creams they do help honest.

Mamadiva... According to the NHS website: "Some people may have a reaction to aqueous cream when it is used as an emollient cream. For this reason, it is recommended only as a soap substitute and not as a 'leave on' emollient."

Research has shown that over half of children react to it when used as an emollient - see here

HI Guys, my son Reu is 13 months old. We have been trying to do our best with his excema for months, was really bad when he was 4-5 months old. since then he has been having oliy baths, loads of different creams. got referred to Dermatologists who told us to bath everyday, use epaderm 6 times a day, steroids when bad and now they are telling us to do Wet wraps and dry wraps during the day.

Epaderm has made it worse though. now his arms look like a desert in drout. no natural oils. skin can't breath...really really dry. My brother is allergic to Petroleum in Vaseline so beg to think Epaderm is totally the wrong cream for my son.

Am now doing my own thing....and skin looks amazing after just a few days

  1. bath and moisturise everyday - doublebase and homeopathic cream
  2. teaspoon of olive oil every day like the spanish!
  3. extra fluids in a bottle to rehydrate.
  4. steroids when bad.
  5. homeopathic Beeswax Graphitius Cream - has worked wonders!!!! skin feels oiled and supple and lovely for first time in ages!!!
