dd1 had a lick of peanut butter, please advise on this

as am really not sure.

she said afterwards, within minutes, that her tongue and throat felt funny. so i gave her some anti histimine.

she isnt swelling up, or having problems breathing, or red eyes etc etc that she usually gets when having an allergic reaction, so am inclined to think maybe nothing to worry about.

dd1 is a bit of drama queen soemtimes. not always.

Dd1 had exactly the same reaction. I went to the GP and they have got her booked in for an allergy test. Better to be safe I say

no experience with kids but DH has nut allergy

if he starts to eat something with traces he gets a reaction on his tongue and mouth

Dd didn't swell up or any of the other things either but said her tongue and throat were itchy, she was trying to scape them with atissue!

Oh, and was it the first time she's had peanuts? )I'll shut up in a minute!)

she did that weird tongue 'urghy'; thing she does soemtimes when something doesnt feel right.

will get GP's appointment.

but they have me down as paranoid mother. she had a similar reaction once after some chocolate and GP told me it wasnt anything to worry about.

They do have a habit of making you feel like you're mithering don't they? Think they'll be more cautious with peanuts. I went presuming they'd say it was nothing to worry about but they insisted it got checked out. All the best

I think she will be ok for now Misdee, but I would definately get her checked for a nut allergy just in case. Don't forget that each exposure to a (potential) allergen, the reaction will be worse, so next time it could be a full blown anaphylactic shock. Not that I am saying she is allergic mind, but best get her checked, dr's be damned! My tongue gets tingly and scrathy with some foods too, but I have no allergies that I am aware of, so it might be one of those things, but I wouldn't take the chance with a child/nuts until they had been tested. Don't let the dr fob you off!! Good luck!

she has other allergies, doesn't she? Peanut allergie are not always dramatic the first time especially if you do the sensible thing (give antihistamine quickly). As that chocolate could have nut traces (a lot does) the two could be related.

Better safe than sorry because if it's more than a lick it could be a lot worse.

yes she has other allergies. is a typical atopic child.

I'd tell the gp that she came out in a rash too. No-one will ever know! I'd definitely want it tested.

My ds said his tongue was 'spicey' the first time he had peanut but then promptly threw up.

sounds like typical mild allergic reaction to nuts

from experience if the swelling or breathing difficulties aren't immediate then they aren't going to happen...this time anyway.

Definitely mention it to GP

my ds gets this with his tongue. He is nut allergic. The good news is that nut allergies (according to my consultant) do not tend to get worse with repeated exposure-the reaction is usually predictable. But there is always the chance of a serious reaction. Get her checked sounds like a reaction to me. If she only licked it then she won't have had much peanut butter. Had she eaten more you may have found that she vomitted.
