Perennial Allergic Rhinitus in 5 year old, to treat or not and how?

I think that DS1, like me, has perennial allergic rhinitus.

He wakes up each morning mouth breathing, then sneezes a few times and it eases.

I don't see much mouth breathing but sometimes when I ask him to smell something, he says "I can't smell things". This happens even when he doesn't have a cold.
Going outside doesn't make it any worse so I think it's dust more than pollen.

Should I obtain treatments? I saw some adverts in a catalogue long ago for drug-free treatments but can't remember what they were. I'm a bit scared of starting him on whatever the kiddie version of beconase/flixonase is because I was told by an ENT specialist that over the very long term those drugs thin the skin inside your nose (presumably making you more susceptible to infection...)

Sorry not to be much help but I would see what your GP thinks.

Ds was on flixonase and also loratadine. He was given adult flixonase even though he was only 9. His rhinitis caused chronic sinusitus, which needed several doses of abs to clear it up. Nowadays he just uses the loratadine and steaming with olbas oil if he gets really blocked.
