Does this sound like it could be asthma?

My ds1 is three, he has had a cough now for about three months but the past 3-4 weeks it has got worse. I took him to the docs 3 wks ago but they said his chest and everything sounded clear, but since then he has been up at 5am ish every morning just coughing and coughing for a good couple of hours, the past couple of nights he has been awake at 3am ish too. He is not himself and keeps saying his tummy hurts which I am not surprised about because of all the coughing. He coughs all through the day too, but not as prolonged as first thing.

I am going to take him back to the docs tomorrow but was wondering if any of this sounded familiar to anyone. Could it just be hayfever related? Both he and my ds2 have eczema, although ds1's is far less than ds2, in fact most of it cleared up the time he was 2.

The reason I am asking if it is asthma/hayfever is because the specialist we took ds2 to said that if they have eczema they have a greater chance of getting the other two as they are all part of the same group.

I hope this makes sense, any thoughts would be appreciated

I would suggest you call the asthma UK helpline (staffed by asthma nurses) and talk through your concerns .. they do seem to know more than doctors on this to be honest .. it's manned monday to friday and they are lovely people.

I would be suspecting asthma because of the night-time symptoms .. asthma has a tendency to be worst during the early hours

does he wheeze too?

asthma UK contact details .. phone number top left-hand corner, can also email them

Ah thanks twiglett, I will look into that. When I was sat up with him two nights ago he seemed to be wheezing a little bit, but I have not noticed it during the day.

I just hate seeing him like this, he is just not himself and it has been dragging on for what feels like forever now.

I'll see what my doc says tomorrow, she is really good, hopefully she will be in. If I get no luck from her I'll call the helpline.

You're welcome .. I'm sorry you're having such unbroken nights

I'd call helpline first tbh ... then you can discuss what they say with your doctor

From your description it sounds as though it might be asthma, especially the night-time coughing.

With ds2 the GP prescribed a blue reliever and asked us to keep a diary for a couple of weeks to see if there was a pattern to the cough and how often the inhaler was needed.

Good luck.

If anyone is interested.. I took him to the docs today and he has been given antibiotics, doc says it sounds like he has lots of mucus which has become infected which is causing it. Will wait and see what the abs do
