Anything that actually works for mosquito bites?

I’ve tried hydrocortisone cream, cream with lidocaine. The little electric clickers. Also oral Cetirizine/Zirtek.
Nothing seems to stop the raging misery. The only thing I haven’t tried is those heat pens.

I do my best to prevent bites by covering up and using DEET liberally.

Any advice gratefully received. Currently on holiday in Italy and only have three bites but they’re driving me crazy and preventing sleep. I never scratch.

Yes, we used to buy a tube of roll on relief stuff in Italy, I think in the supermarket? It may have been called Pica or similar, but it was a long time ago. Our Italian friends used to put weak diluted bleach on them.

I'm currently in Spain, and will attach a picture of what I am currently using to give you an idea of the sort of thing, instant relief!

If it helps you to seek assistance, the Italian word for mosquito is zanzara.

A hot teaspoon. Leave a spoon in a cup of hot water until it’s the same temperature. Apply to the bite, repeat. Don’t make it so hot you burn yourself like I did!

You have my sympathy, I suffer really badly with them.

Apparently the heat denatures the enzymes that cause the itch.

This works for me every time.
No hot water put the spoon in a cup of tea/coffee.

Thanks everyone. I will try the hot spoon now!

A hot blast from a hairdryer works to stop the itch for a few hours, as hot as you can bear directly on the bite for a few seconds.

I use a very small heat device that I can keep on a keychain and that plugs into my phone if I need it. It works very reliably against bites. We got this because my daughter is very sensitive to mosquito bites and it has not been an issue since. Other heat devices work as well, but since it goes on the keychain, I also always have it on hand, which was often an issue with other solutions.

I find that a cold pain relieving gel like Deep Relief helps a lot. It’s a mixture of lidocaine to numb and cool the area with ibuprofen to ease the pain. I put it on two or three times a day .
it’s especially useful at night when we get much hotter anyway.

That sounds great and I love the little iPhone gadget.

Since I used a hot teaspoon my bites have calmed down. We will see how things go as the evening progresses!

Yeah hot teaspoon is the way. Or hairdryer, that works too.

I dismissed it for years and then one day I was absolutely desperate with awful bites that were so itchy and I had nothing in the house. Instant relief.

snowymarbles · 16/06/2026 16:55

I bought a heat zapper and it was great.

with your clean thumb nail make a x imprint over bite
seems to work for me. I’m covered in bites today!

Twizzlelolly · 16/06/2026 18:07

Toothpaste.

StabiaGirl · 16/06/2026 18:45

Thank you

The hot ceramic pen-shaped device I find works better than a hot spoon, but same principle. It does seem really hot though, so I tend to only use the sensitive setting.
