GP ignoring allergy concerns

We have been to the GP upwards six times for what seems pretty clear to me to be cmpa. We have managed to get ds on SMA althera but he has still continued to have diarrhoea, reflux, nasal respiratory issues and now rashes. She said yesterday that he is ‘thriving’ and ‘needs to persevere’. It’s pretty infuriating.

Has anyone had this experience?

You have my sympathies. I have but my daughter is now 17 so it’s a long time ago, although she still has a life threatening CMPA. I got fed up with the constant ‘is she your first?’ And ‘babies do cry’. I breastfed her until she was 17 months in the end as we kept ending up in hospital due to allergies whenever I tried any formula but in the end it was Neocate active which she could have. They kept prescribing formula which wasn’t 100% milk free until she was old enough for tests. It was a horrific period so all I can advise is keep pushing.

littlecreeature · 18/04/2026 21:12

Been there OP. We ended up on Neocate after breastfeeding for first 8 months. I will say it took months for my little one to fully recover and be free of allergy symptoms. We do have an IGE allergy and an EpiPen now though.

littlecreeature · 18/04/2026 21:12

Also I do believe that Althera, though hydrolysed, still has cows milk in.

zipmedown · 18/04/2026 21:32

That nappy is normal for a hydrolysed formula. Have you tried infant Gaviscon/ thickener for the reflux?

LittleLinnet · 19/04/2026 15:07

@zipmedown He has been on seemingly everything. He is on omeprazole now and hes just gone 6 months. While he’s refluxing lots still, I’m holding on to the thing I’ve heard countless times - he’ll grow out of it 😑

@littlecreeature yes, i think that’s why it’s a dairy allergy

@Linguist1979 thanks for replying - I definitely feel like I’ve been made to come across as overly concerned and burdensome. I think if the GP had a rash and diarrhoea every time she ate, she’d want relief :(

If formula seems to be the issue is 100% breast milk an option?

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 19/04/2026 15:13

If you have the money or.private insurance just go see a private dr. Its be about £250- 500max

I has similar but after the 2nd time went private. The change was almost immediate.

LittleLinnet · 19/04/2026 21:03

@StevieNic I desperately wanted to breastfeed and tried every way to persevere including securing a donor, but for a lot of reasons (low supply, herniated disc, poor latch) i finally had to stop trying at 4 months and the donor wasn’t dairy free or producing enough for all his feeds. She is great- I’m so grateful for the ways she helped.

Could it be lactose intolerance? Sma and Aptamil peptil both still have lactose. You need to see a different gp and ask for neonate as it is the inky one that doesn't have lactose in it.

I have cmpa (46 years old) and lactose intolerance. Dd had lactose intolerance as a baby. I had no end of rows with the gp as they kept saying cmpa (family history) even though she was on Aptamil peptil and I knew it was lactose as her symptoms are the same as mine for lactose.

Mum knows best! Keep fighting, get your hv on side.

asdbaybeeee · 19/04/2026 21:52

My youngest had cmpa as I was breast feeding I could manage it myself luckily. Grew out of the allergy around 8 years old. Does have a peanut allergy.

Workingmammabear · 19/04/2026 22:23

My DD had these exact symptoms. The reflux stopped when weaning. Omeprazole helped but didn't cure it. Gaviscon did nothing. SMA Althera prescription from 6weeks old to 1 year as breast feeding a baby that constantly vomited was sould destroying.
Do bear in mind some babies (like mine) with CMPA may also have soy allergy so when you start trying alternatives, it's worth making sure your first line of attempts are oat milk based rather than soy based. Also soy is hidden in lots of things and at 3.5 years old I still make mistakes on this.

still hoping she'll grow out of it

humptydumptyfelloff · 19/04/2026 22:45

There’s only
one fully cow milk protein free formula the others still have traces in

weve just had very similar and our baby looked just like yours but then got progressively worse. Eventually we got an urgent referral to the hospital dieticians who put them on the right formula and he’s thrived ever since.

any paediatric dietician will tell you that’s a cmpa allergy but you have to get through the gp to get to them.

our gp also told us our baby was thriving with green flemmy stools rashes and respiratory issues 🤨

I would see a different gp and ask for a referral asap to hospital dieticians.

failing that rock up at a and e with your baby and youl get seen there
