Dairy intolerant toddler got dairy

BluetCeeCee · 03/03/2026 19:54

I think my dairy intolerant 2 year old was given a pouch of dairy yoghurt today.

We tried the milk ladder a couple of times months ago, but we never really made any progress as she got fed up with the dairy bits I was offering her. So she is still completely dairy free.

Does anyone know how quickly she'd show signs of reacting to it? I googled it but didn't get much clarity so hoping for lived experience!

Mine reacted within an hour or two every time. Until once when he was given it and didn't react at all. He was fine with milk ever since.

Hopefully she's ok then, as there were no signs before she went to bed.

If you don't mind me asking, after the time he didn't react to how did you go bout introducing more of it?

72 hours is your window

He had been very, very severely ill and was under a paed gastro, so we followed his guidance. He suggested introducing one new thing a week, and discontinuing if we saw ill effects before reintroducing a few weeks later.

Fortunately we saw no ill effects, so within a couple of months he could eat pretty much anything.

@CatherinedeBourgh sorry to hear he was so ill but glad it worked out well in the end

@Monsterslam ok thanks, we'll keep monitoring

Hope your dc stayed well! It's horribly stressful, isn't it?

Dc is now grown up, but I still remember that time as if it was yesterday.

Thank you, she had very slight symptoms but is now fully back to normal. Gives me new hope for the milk ladder!

Does sound like you might be able to start the milk ladder but I’d give it at least 2 weeks from this episode so her gut has healed again.

Oh definitely, we'll wait until we're past the worst of the colds anyway, it's just one after the other at the moment!
