Baby suffering from milk intolerance

Hi, my 6 week old was put on SMA Althera about 6 days ago due to suspected milk allergy. His symptoms then were excessive bottom wind, constant crying and arching back, rash on face, and constipation exceeding once every 24-48hrs.

Yesterday i arranged a consultation, but my husband thiught he was fine as experienced no fuss when he was feeding him during the late evening/early morning feeds. During early days of new formula. But I've been the one whose been caring for him and seen a big difference.

He since has worsened. Constant cry’s, absolutely refuses to lie down after a feed and held to receive air buildup in stomachs. Last night he started coughing, screaming after bottles, vomits much of what he's fed. Poops are explosive and almost instant once fed. Poo is thicker and green with mucus. he sounds like a snorting congested pig and
sneezes constantly, especially after feeding.

The web is a wonderful tool, but cant rely on information provided. By looking up the above reports showing that this seems to me like silent reflux as he doesn’t projectile vomit as before the new formula, but still vomits.

Does this sound like CMPA or reflux?

How can we help him until we get an appointment?

You might want to try goat milk, as your baby might be intolerant to cows' milk. Kendamil do a goat milk formula. Goat milk has less lactose than cows' milk, and the fat globules are said to be more easily digested.

Whatever you find, I hope that he feels better soon!

God dont try Goat’s Milk if it is CMPA. I wouldn’t be trying milk from any other mammal without supervision from a HCP. I have CMPA for context.

If you haven’t already @arunajain82, I would seek medical attention urgently.

Have a read of this from Allergy UK before you see a Doctor though and see if any of the symptoms are similar.

It could be CMPA, it could be multiple allergies or there could be a medical condition but it does need investigation Flowers

Cow’s Milk Allergy

Cow’s milk allergy is an abnormal response by the body’s immune system in which proteins in a food are recognised as a potential threat.

Goats milk is not recommended for those with CMPA due to similar proteins.

The allergy milks can cause reflux as they are so thin. I would speak to your GP and ask for reflux medication. My son had both CMPA and reflux took a while to find the right milk for him finally settled on Neocate Syneo and infant Gaviscon for the reflux . Also Althera is a extensively hydrolysed formula so does still contain milk
proteins . Your child may need a amino acid formula such a Neocate SMA Alfamino or Nutramigen Puramino

Brilliant hopefully the Neocate and Gaviscon work for your little one , it can take upto 6 weeks to see a difference and might be some ups and downs during this time x
