Baby with milk allergy

Hi all, I would really appreciate some advice and some help on my nine month old baby. He was diagnosed with a suspected milk allergy at the age of three months and as a breastfed baby, I went dairy free for him. I am back to work working two jobs so need an alternative to work alongside breastfeeding him. I have read that goats milk usually has a very high acceptance however when he has goats milk, that night he will be screaming in pain and wiggling around like a worm like his tummy really hurts. He has been prescribed milk, I haven’t tried as the ingredients look terrible. Has anyone else been in a similar situation and has their baby got on with a specific milk? He is currently breastfed and on Kendamil goats milk however I’ve obviously stopped the goats milk. He is at nursery tomorrow and I have no idea what to do. Thanks for your help.

Both my little ones have cmpa. I've had to cut out dairy and soya (youngest is 3 months).

I'm combi feeding him when I'm not there to bf, he's on prescribed neocate/expressed bm. You could be setting back his gut recovery using goats and would be as well eating dairy from what I've been advised.

I'd try the prescription when you're there, it can be a bit of trial and error to find one they agree with (eldest was on three diff prescription formulas before he was happy). Wishing you luck, know your struggles 💐

Have you not been referred to a dietitian?

Hannaskyee · 07/01/2026 06:03

I’ve begged and begged the doctors for help. Was promised a referral but it didn’t happen. Was on a telephone call back yesterday (which didn’t happen) to start the referral request again.

Thank you. I’ve been told goats milk has a high acceptance but I definitely think you’re right. Ok, goats milk in the bin back to prescribed formula. Have you tried the cows milk allergy aptamil?

At one year I moved my DS with CMPA to Koko coconut milk which he liked - but at 9 months he needs more nutrients so if he tolerates his prescribed formula stick to that when he needs it for next 3 months then try something like Koko or pea protein milk - and breastfeed as much/ long as you are able. Bin the goats milk - type A2 milk products might be helpful in the future but definitely too early now if he is CMPA, avoiding all dairy has to be strict. Try the formula as it really is the only option and it’s just 3 months until he can move to a dairy free milk all of which have a list of ingredients unlike cows milk. Best of luck to you both, cutting out all dairy is hard you are doing a great job.

We use Plenish enriched oat milk. It’s got calcium and is nice to drink.

Faithless12 · 07/01/2026 06:36

I expressed and sent DS with breast milk to childcare. He refused to drink the prescribed formula.
Its been a long time since DS was BF but my reading at the time said no animal milk and soya as the proteins are very similar. I’d be interested where you read goats milk had high acceptance rates as it looks like we are going to have the same issue with DD

Thank you. I think the health visitor at the time said to try it. is there healthy milk alternatives out there for when he is one year old? If I can try my very best to express all his milk needs until he is one? I really appreciate your help

Thank you for your help. May I ask what you use when they are over one?

Also, try Optibac which is a probiotic to heal the gut. I gave mine this and nearly two years later, they seem to have grown out of it but I haven’t done the ladder.

I think the advice is to continue until they are two with alternative milks being used in porridge etc. they generally are not calorific enough. I used koko for weetabix (they now do a kids version) as DS could not tolerate soya.

atatotallosss · 12/01/2026 00:36

Apologies for the late reply!

With my first we tried aptimal but after. A month he suddenly couldn't tolerate it, he then settled on nutrimagen but his skin still flared with eczema (were currently doing the milk ladder with him and he can handle baked milk but not yet cheese).

My little one got moved straight to Neocate (has zero milk protein) as if they react to dairy in bm its already been filtered so will apparently react to the likes of broken down formulas (apatiml and nutrimigen).

Gps are horrendous for advising on cmpa, I refused to leave my surgery until he was referred to a pediatric dietician with my second as I knew the signs and what he was advising I knew was incorrect.

We ended up booking a private online consultation with the Happy Feeding Company and she wrote us a letter to give to our gp. She was great at answering questions etc.

My LO is still struggling to adapt to neocate so I think we may need to try SMA Alfamino so I know your struggle.

Hope you're managing ok, it's such a tough thing to navigate with conflicting info & can feel like you're banging your head off a wall.

Just to touch on this. We tried soy milk with my first and got told he also has a soy allergy after he reacted, (no one told us to cut it out!), so went with Alpro Growing Up Oat Milk, our NHS dietician said normal Oat milk would be fine as long as it has added vitamins in it.

Under a microscope soy and dairy are similar so little ones typically react to both. Unfortunately this is in a lot of df yoghurt alternatives etc.
