My DS has been on a dairy and soya free diet for the past year and I have been trying to find an ice-cream he could have. I have now found a really good alternative from my local health food shop and felt I had to pass on the news!! It's called Booja Booja and it's made in Norfolk. It comes in a few flavours and it really is the next best thing to the real thing (if not better). Hope this helps some of you other desperate parents! Now all I need to do is find a cone he can have - any ideas??

What's it made from?
Isn't sorbet allergen free?

ToughDaddy · 10/06/2008 23:27

Thanks. Have you tried Swedish Glace (dairy, soya and gluten free) which comes in atleast three flavours ? It is delicious.

stirlingmum · 11/06/2008 12:39

We get the Swedish Glace - Tesco's and Sainsbury's stock.
Some sorbets are ok - some have egg white in though so be careful if you or dc have an egg allergy.

cmotdibbler · 11/06/2008 12:42

There is a Swedish glace cornetto alike thats gf/df, but I don't know about sf.

rebelmum1 · 11/06/2008 12:54

I can give you a recipe if you like.

Slice any soft fruit spread evenly on a plate. Freeze add some soya milk and liquidise. Delicious creamy dairy and sugar free ice cream.

You don't have to buy it ready made and you know exactly what's in it. You can make a similar smoothie mixture and make your own ice lollies too.

getbackinyouryurtjimjams · 11/06/2008 13:02

I'd forgotten about the swedish glace cornettos. They are delicious.

And I must make ice lollies this weekend.

mummypig · 11/06/2008 13:02

The normal Swedish Glace is made from soya. I wasn't aware of any soya free varieties.

You can get rice versions too - the brand is called B'Nice - available from Goodness Direct. And there is an oat version called Oat Supreme but last time I looked no UK online shops stocked it.

So thanks for the Booja Booja info. I think we will have to try it out in our household pretty soon.

i got really excited because someone raved about these a few months ago and recommended the maple one . it was bleuuhh.
if anyone tries any nice ones let me know and I'll try again - they're not cheap

BeautyandtheBeast · 12/06/2008 15:45

No, its not cheap but it's so nice to see my DS enjoy something he had previously not been allowed so I happily stump up the cash (anything for a quiet life!). I've got the pot in front of me now and basically the Vanilla one is made of Water (Pure), Agave (diabetic friendly syrup from the Agave Cactus - low GI), Cashew Nuts (high in mins and vits A, D & E and Fine Bourbon Vanilla from Uganda!!

I have also tried the Chocolate one which has gone down a storm too.

Yes, I thought all Swedish Glace contained soya too but will def look again just in case - as they say variety is the spice of life

Thanks for your recipe rebelmum1. I Have also made lollies with DS using strawberries, bananas, mango plus the Oat Supreme Cream. These come out quite well too.

DS2 is allowed so few things that i have no problem paying for it either but my question was because the maple one i bought tasted like frozen cats piss and no one ( DH and 3 DC's) would eat more than a teaspoon.
Even the dog balked.
If anyone can recommend a really nice flavour i will be happy to pay and try again.

BeautyandtheBeast · 12/06/2008 17:03

Funnily enough I didnt think the Maple one was quite that bad, however the Vanilla and Chocolate ones are nicer (in my opinion). It's like everything in the "Free From" range, it's never as good as the real thing, you just have to find the best substitute. I'm sure given the choice my DS would love to sit down and eat a tub of Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey (or whatever it's called).

FYI Booja Booja also do a Ginger flavoured ice-cream too, havent tried it yet as it doesnt really appeal but surely it has to beat cats piss? .

Guadalupe · 12/06/2008 17:11

oh yes, that is quite nice. They make them near here. The chocolates are delicious too.

BeautyandtheBeast · 12/06/2008 17:29

They make Chocolate too? After spouting off about how good their ice-cream is, I haven't even been on their website !

OP posts:
pagwatch · 12/06/2008 17:57

yes
not sure cats piss is going to be their best seller.
I'll give the vanilla a go.
DS2 has been gfcf for so long (8 years) that actually he now wouldn't eat Ben and Jerrys if you put it in front of him. makes managing his diet a little easier.

FWIW I think most of the free from range is pretty pants. I make most of his cakes and biscuits and bread. Sometimes it would just be nice to go to a shop or cafe and just choose ofthe menu/shelves.

Guadalupe · 12/06/2008 18:01

well, they are chocolate makers, that's what they do. But recently they have ventured into icecream.

Mr Booja Booja was buying some salad in our grocers recently and I had to tell him how much I loved the champagne truffles and he said those were his favourite too.

BeautyandtheBeast · 12/06/2008 18:06

I know - we went to Devon on our hols last year and I had to take the bloody bread maker!! Dread to think how we would cope if we went abroad.

guadalupe

you great big suck up

did you get any free ones?

Guadalupe · 12/06/2008 18:24

I know, I know, I was hoping that he'd whip out some new flavour from his bag for me to try at least but he just smiled and carried on buying his salad.

Guadalupe · 12/06/2008 18:25

the hazelnut truffles were a life saver in a dairy free year.

pagwatch · 12/06/2008 18:28

at man having to hide in lettuce to avoid women flirting girlishly in the hope of choccies.

ah but we've all done it....

Guadalupe · 12/06/2008 18:32

I didn't say I was flirting

though I think he may have been quite good looking in a rugged older man kind of way.
