Piriton - if it clears up the snot, does it mean it's not a cold?

My 2.2 year old has had a really snotty nose for the last couple of days, she seems fine in herself, but is really bunged up. I gave her some piriton, because we thought it might be hayfever, it clears everything up really quickly, but is this because she has hayfever, or is this just what Piriton does anyway?

(Does that make sense - I'm doing this in the middle of getting dd's ready for toddler group, so sorry if a bit waffly!)

Piriton blocks the histamine that the body produces. Histamine is a chemical which the body releases during an allergic reaction which causes inflamation and itching. Priton blocks the effects of histamine to calm the body down. I did know this already but checked on the bottle. DD has hayfever.

It could be that DD is having a problem with all the pollen, it has been super high at the moment as the grass pollen season has just started. NOt fun for those who suffer.

Thanks for that, I thought that it probably was hayfever, because dh suffers from it really badly, but was hoping that she might have escaped it as she has already been diagnosed with asthma, ah well. I've heard that eating local honey can make a difference, and as honey on toast is about the only food dd1 will eat, I will give that a try.

I have heard honey can help too.

OK, here is when I go into super nerd mode. There are 3 main types of heyfever you can suffer from Grass, Tree and Ragweed and they all come into bloom at different times of the year. This week grass has hit, perhaps DD will only be affected at the strongest times?
