Mild CMPA

Please can someone help me with some allergy questions?

My DS is 20 months, BF until 14 months, weaned onto solids at 6 months.

We noticed when weaning a rash on his face and some dry patches on his skin, we were told he would soon grow out of it and it was due to time of year (heating on, new foods etc) During this time he was having cows milk with porridge etc.

Once he came off the breast, we noticed that his poos were getting bigger and he was completely emptying his bowels they had lots of undigested food. This however coincided with what we later found out to be was a strain of rotavirus and was advised by the doctor to take him off lactose as he may have had an intolerance due to the bug.

As we introduced milk back into his diet we noticed the foul smelling poos return, we were told his gut could take a while to heal so to take him off milk for a further month. this process happened again and I got a referral to the dietician who has now said it’s likely a dairy allergy and to stay off for another 6 months.

does anyone have any knowledge of mild cmpa? I’m not dismissing what the dietician has suggested but at present the only factor is sloppy poos. DS eats well, sleeps well and never seems to be in any pain with his tummy so just wondered whether we are overthinking? I hate not being able to give him whole milk and full fat yoghurt. Hes never had reflux and is growing well. It’s been two weeks and there’s not been a huge difference to his poo?

Did they say to go lactose free or dairy free for CMPA? These are two seperate things.

My DS had mild CMPA. We stared him on the milk and egg ladder at about 14 months. He is 11 niw and doesn’t have any signs of it. When he was 6-12 months his main symptom was bad eczema.

Told me to go dairy free, so avoiding any milk products and soy etc!

If they’re telling you to avoid soya as well then they suspect CMPA which is an allergy to the protein in the milk. The protein in soya is very similiar which means around 50% of kids with cmpa also have an allergy to soya.

Both my children had CMPA and out grew it by 6. Neither will drink cows milk now as a preference but they are fine with Greek yoghurt, cheese and ice cream.

Ah yes I know it’s the dairy allergy and what to avoid; I just wondered what symptoms were like for those suffering as I suspected it would be worse. The dietician said there’s no guarantee that it most definitely is an allergy but restricting the dairy is the only way to find out
