What suntan lotion for baby with eczema?

DD nearly one now and has mild eczema that can flare up quite badly and did so in the recent burst of heatwave. I'm planning to keep her covered up and out of the sun as much as possible but will need to give her some topical protection too. Is there any particular one that people have found good for their babies with eczema?

Many thanks

I have bought Organic Children sunlotion by Green People this week for my DS with eczema. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet but it is for sensitive skin and free from parabens etc. The aftersun lotion is also good for children with eczema. This is their website for you to have a look www.greenpeople.co.uk. HTH

Thanks, I did see that one and wondered. Did you go for factor 25 or stronger?

The French spa brand Avene is particularly good for eczema sufferers. They have a range of sunscreens for babies and children.

Pixiefish · 04/06/2008 17:53

Whatever you do don't go for the high factor with her. It's thick and it makes eczema worse as it clogs the pores. My dermatologist told me no higher than a factor 25 for dd

Oh thanks Pixiefish, that's great to know. Will check out Avene as well. Thanks Castille.

You can get a hyper sensitive one on prescription from your GP as I did years ago for my DD (sorry, it was so long ago I can't remember it's name)

Do you have a shade-a-babe or protect-a-bub or similar? I didn't put suncream on ds at all when he was a year old but I always used the shade-a-babe and went to shady places to let him crawl around. He was fine.

Last year I used Aveeno on him and it was fine, but this year it has really aggrevated his eczema so I am using Sun Sense and it seems fine so far.

bran · 04/06/2008 18:07

Sorry, should have used a thesaurus, please replace the second and third use of 'fine' with something that makes it seem as though I have an extensive vocabulary.

alittleteapot · 04/06/2008 20:58

Thanks all. Didn't know Aveeno did a sun cream - we use their moisturiser and it's the most effective so far. I wonder if they do a factor 25 to fit in with what Pixiefish said - bran maybe that's why it's aggravated your ds - were you using a higher factor?

ooh this is v useful didn't know about the high factor problem. HAve been using Nivea factor 50 as paranoid about sun damage but DD has awful rash now.

WendyWeber · 04/06/2008 21:06

bran, thanks for link to sunsense on amazon, I didn't know they did it

(and lol at your fines )

alittleteapot · 04/06/2008 21:08

re: high factors there's also the thing about vitamin d deficiency and that we're overprotecting our children from the sun and losing its benefits...

There have been several threads like this recently I think, with the only conclusion being that different skin likes different sun cream! DS reacts (as in, eczema flares up) to the Green People stuff, and he got on well with Avene last summer but reacted to it the first time we used it this summer (?!?!?). At the moment we're using E45 but hate it (makes him look ill, difficult to apply, difficult to remove and if it goes in his eyes it's awful) but at least he doesn't react to it....... so far!

WendyWeber · 04/06/2008 21:11

alt, I read recently that 15mins a day on face, arms & hands was enough exposure to top up Vit D so it should be manageable?

alittleteapot · 04/06/2008 21:15

VW that's certainly true of moisturisers so makes sense true of sun creams too.

WW interesting - yes, should be fine.

Think will try Aveeno as the moisturiser suits us and presumably is the base for their sun cream too...

I have the green people one and have been using it for a few weeks on dd, if anything her excema is actually better than usual.
