Clinique giving me allergic rashes?

Hi, 👋 I’ve had a year of blepharitis issues which led to cellulitis and my eyes still flare from time to time. About three months ago I started switching all makeup and skin care to Clinique and my eyelids and eye area is worse than ever and now my lips are peeling. feeling so defeated as I changed to an expensive brand to combat these issues! I used no7 before.

has anyone else had this or similar issues? I know I need to eliminate products to find the culprit - I use so much though … make up remover, cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser, primer, foundation, than make up products. Is there a reliable safe brand I can replace these with while I work out what the issue is? I find it difficult to imagine not putting anything on, and for how long …

the other thing I have started is collagen powder but honestly I have been so inconsistent taking this I don’t think that can be the issue! Any help very much appreciated - I am looking so puffy right now!

Go right back to basics.
The simplest non perfumed products.
One simple cleanser, one moisturiser, build from there

Sorry to reply so late - do you have any product recommendations? I’m nervous about everything now! Or would you go back to what you were using before?

Cetaphil, cerave or la roche posay ciciplast for skincare. Makeup - now I struggle with a lot of makeup and I've switched to using mineral products only (English mineral makeup) and it's much better. BUT it's expensive to change everything over so I'd recommend going with skincare first. English mineral makeup do an excellent mascara though so you could try that rather than spend ££ on a complete revamp.

My dd has allergies to some of the chemicals in make up and skin care products. It’s all very difficult because a company can change their formula so it’s a bit like Russian roulette. You should see your GP and ask for a referral for a test. My dd had 180 allergens on her back for hers and it’s changed her life as she knows what to avoid now.

Old favourites are

I had similar with Clinique , I don’t know all my triggers but I do know that mica and bismuth both set me off. I can’t wear any ‘glowy’ foundations.

i can use no7 Hydraluminous though, but just don’t wear much make up. And just use v plain skincare

BunnyRuddington · 02/10/2025 21:12

I get Blepharitis too, it can be agony and I really feel for you.

I’ve started using Estée Lauder Daywear. It’s not cheap but you can get it in offer a few times a year.

What I absolutely can’t use is Clinique. Had to give it all to a very grateful DD.

PeonyPatch · 02/10/2025 21:13

I had similar reactions to Clinique. I find their products way too harsh. I’d recommend Simple, or La Roche Posay

MujeresLibres · 02/10/2025 22:16

I've had the same with Clinique. I use a No7 eye cream now.

Maverick66 · 03/10/2025 00:54

I have used Clinique over 30 years .
However in the last three years all of their skincare range has left me itchy and irritated .
I don't know if it's my age ...menopause ..or a change in their ingredients but I can no longer use it.
I have not been able to find a decent replacement moisturiser either.

RabbitsEatPancakes · 03/10/2025 01:32

I react to a lot of things but haven't to clinique- I've always used their moisture surge range- not the eye cream though as my eyes don't tolerate anything.

Massive flare up postpartum so I started probiotics, started a body wash regime with hibiwash. And started using Korean skincare and so far zero reactions. Not wearing much make up though- just a BB cream and bit of concealer, blush. Double cleanse in the evening and then gentle hydrating toners.

I can’t use a lot of Clinique products either, strangely their yellow moisturiser really suits my skin but everything else is hit and miss so tend to avoid

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/10/2025 02:57

I have sensitive skin and can't use anything Clinique. There are very few moisturisers I can use without flaring up - my current favourite range is Cera-Ve. I use their face wash, day cream and separate eye cream.

I can also use Nivea Soft and Body Shop Aloe Vera if that helps at all.

Everything else, no matter how fancy or "hypo allergenic" - I get redness, tingling, itching.

I gave my Clinique purchases away too although I didn't have as bad a reaction as you two. I got red patches that disappeared in a short time.

Poilin · 03/10/2025 03:06

Clinique products are great but awful if given the incorrect advice for you skin type .Return your products to the store if they refuse you a refund contact Clinique head office they are normally quiet good with refunds .

Darragon · 03/10/2025 03:11

I am also allergic to Clinique op. Pretty much every other skincare product is fine, the only other thing I’ve ever reacted to is Snazaroo face paint. I don’t know if there’s a common denominator but I’d suggest trying nothing for a week or two to let your reaction settle, then try a brand like boots ingredients or nivea that isn’t a huge investment.

70sMuuMuu · 03/10/2025 03:14

The only product I’ve ever been allergic to is Clinique’s Take the Day Off cleansing balm. It’s weird because it seems so bland but I noticed it felt like my eyes were ‘bleary’ after using it and then a few days later (should have stopped!) my eyes completely swelled up.

Simple is the only one my skin can handle. They use the minimum number of ingredients.

Longingforspringtime · 03/10/2025 04:47

Clinique products are the only ones I'm allergic to. I'm glad to find out that I'm not the only one!

hhtddbkoygv · 03/10/2025 05:47

I had the same. Have you tried the on skin app?

I use Garnier to remove make up and Lancome for most of my make up. In terms of moisturisers etc I'm prescribed Cetraben and this is what I use. I occasionally use Lancome spf serum too when required

herewegoagain432 · 03/10/2025 05:58

I had this with Clinique and eventually had a patch test and it turns out I have allergy to nickel and iron oxides which are in Clinique makeup (used to create their pigments) I now use cereve and Mineral makeup (Idun) and no issues. X

LavenderBlue19 · 03/10/2025 06:08

Everyone reacts to different things. I have very sensitive skin and I just accept that sometimes I'll buy something that I'll have to immediately chuck because it doesn't suit me. I wouldn't change all my skincare at once, I wouldn't know what was causing the problem.

I have reacted to Clinique mascara in the past, so I don't buy it now. Something being expensive doesn't mean you won't be allergic - it depends what you're sensitive to.

Personally I know I can't use anything with very strong perfumes, niacinamide or shea butter. Simple is a good bet for reactive skin. French brands like Avene and La Roche Posay are good for me too. I actually mostly use Beauty Pie at the moment. Make up I'm usually ok with, just some random products I can't use and no liquid eyeshadow. It's just trial and error, unfortunately.

boatyardblues · 03/10/2025 06:23

Dermalogica does an Ultracalming range specially formulated for sensitive skin. It is very gentle and I’ve used it successfully when my skin has been flaring up with other products. John Lewis stocks a subset of their range including some Ultracalming products. You should be able to track down an Ultracalming travel set so you can try it without a massive outlay. Local stockists and therapists often have a fuller range.

oliveroses · 03/10/2025 06:46

Thanks so much, all - really appreciate the recommendations and I am also reassured that many of you also had similar reactions to Clinique. I will definitely look at mineral make up and the face and eye creams recommended here. This gives me hope that there are gentle solutions out there!xx

It was the yellow one I was using Sad. It was great for a while, then I started reacting.

My skin seems very happy with the Estée Lauder Daywear right now also my bank balance, well not so happy! Grin

Another brand that I’ve used for ages with no problems is Green People.
