CMPA Baby Poop?

Emmakeepstrying · 25/08/2025 19:09

All - with apologies for the photo(!), I have a 10 week old EBF baby who seems well in herself (just very hungry!) but who is producing quite mucus-y poos with some black bits now appearing. Has anyone had any success with this improving on its own, or should I be exploring cutting out dairy and soy? I will also be raising this with my GP. Thank you in advance.

That just looks like normal poo to me?

Why do you think they have CMPA? It’s normal for babies to vom pretty frequently until 6 months when the bowel matures. If they are happy and the weight gain is fine, it’s very unlikely to be.

all your GP is going to say is ‘it might be CMPA’ and advise you to restrict your diet, which is obviously a lot on you.

My CMPA baby had very mucousy poos, often green, and with red blood specks in them. Often explosive. They did start a little like your photos, but got worse. Also copious amounts of vomit from birth. Not normal amounts. Projectile and several outfit changes a day. Terrible sleep also. Usually 90 minutes at a time max, and would take hours to fall asleep. Rarely happy. There are lots of other things that can cause mucousy nappies; colds etc. The GP we saw was very ‘are you first time parents?’ The referrals take a long time. Cutting stuff out is a big pain but faster than the referral process. Dairy and soya free is not fun, but for me seeing my child’s happiness (and poo/vomit!) improve was worth it.

Thank you both - it is the black dots in the poo that are making me question a CMPA on the basis that I expect it is dried blood (but could be wrong!)

@thehonscupboard, at what age did your babies symptoms start? Our little one always seems quite content and is tracking well with weight. She does have some gas pains and naps badly in the day, but will happily do 6-7 hour stretches at night and puts herself to sleep! The black dots have only appeared a couple of times and only since 10 weeks. How quickly after eliminating foods did you see an improvement?

I have a CMPA baby. Her poos before cutting out dairy were all bright green and so much mucus it was like snot. Symptoms improved after 2/3 weeks of cutting it out of my diet. Have you had painful breastfeeding? Cracked nipples can cause tiny spots of dried blood x

My CMPA baby threw almost everything up with projectile force, extremely unhappy/uncomfotable, and the nappies were just pure explosions. It was easier to bath her than try and clean her with wet wipes!
Sleep was seriously scarce.

Once changing her diet, the difference was pretty much immediate. I had a completely different baby ❤️

Thank you all - very interesting! She has some poonamis but they are definitely not every time and they haven’t ever been green (very much mustard here). I have started pumping so perhaps my nipples are sore again which could possibly explain the black but I can’t see any evidence of that. I will perhaps cut it out for two weeks and see if that helps, but it sounds as though it may not be CMPA.

Did you all find symptoms worsened over time?

Thank you again.

My daughters symptoms worsened when we started weaning.
Im still amazed at just how much food has Milk in; even the ‘may contain milk’ is a gamble.

You’ll need to rule out other possible allergies too. Wheat, Soy, Gluten etc

Those look like quite normal nappies to me.

My baby was CMPA and his symptoms started at about 4 weeks old.

He had rashes all over him, dried skin, blisters on his scalp, always needing creams and steroids, he had awful reflux, very slow weight gain, he started refusing to breastfeed, and the screaming was the worse, he just screamed in pain all day and all night.

It was horrific for him and as a mother it was unbearable for me to watch.

It took 4 months of me going back and forth to my health visitor and the GP and being told it was normal baby eczema, that it was “just reflux” and being told I should give formula as I clearly didn’t have enough breast milk, before a fifth GP finally suggested all his all symptoms could be CMPA.

That looks like normal EBF poo.

My baby was combi-fed and has CMPA; he just screamed all the time, had a scaly rash on his cheeks, nappy rash, constantly sick, sneezy and congested. He had terrible trapped wind and his poo was green, explosive, mucusy and finally blood-streaked. CMPA wasn’t diagnosed until he was about 10 weeks old so he was just in pain and miserable because it was repeatedly missed whenever I took him to the GP, and it was only the blood that made me ask the GP outright if it could be CMPA, and eventually the penny dropped.

Thank you all- I have now been off dairy for two weeks and started reintroducing a few days ago. There has been no real change in her mood / sleep but her poos have started having these bits in them again. Would you all still consider this normal? If so, I think we are in the clear!
