Weaning off CMPA formula at 12 months

Hi guys,

My 13 month old has mild CMPA and was prescribed SMA Althera since she was 3 months old. I got a call from the GP saying they will no longer prescribe it and to move her on to oats milk etc.

However for the past 2 months I have been introducing a little cows milk into her diet and she has been tolerating it differently than she used to so I’m not sure if she is outgrowing it (she would have very bad slimey diarrhoea with awful nappy rash when she was younger but now she doesn’t get that, instead has less frequent and very solid poos when I give her cows milk)

I’ve been increasing the amount of cows milk in her feeds. For example, 5oz of formula and 2oz of cows milk. My plan was to slowly increase it until shes off of the formula but not sure if I’m going about it the right away.

My other plan was to move on to growing up oats milk and then slowly introduce cows milk.

Besides the less frequent solid poo’s she seems fine. She has been a bit cranky since I started adding cows milk into her feeds but I think that’s more her gums irritating her.

Sorry my thoughts are all over the place! Just wondered if anyone else had similar experiences and what they’d recommend.

Thank you

HCPs usually recommend doing the Milk Ladder rather than introducing Cow’s Milk like this and the crankiness could well be part of a reaction. Is she under the care of a Paediatric Dietitian?

Agree you should do the milk ladder. The poo change is likely a reaction. If you ignore it it could get worse. I would dial back, switch onto oats milk for a few months and then do the milk ladder very slowly. The whole point of the ladder is to trick the body into tolerating the protein.

Hey, sorry I should have mentioned we did the milk ladder which she was tolerating well (besides yoghurt which the gp said could likely be symptoms of teething)

I have only started introducing milk after completing the milk ladder

Ok so if she had a rection to yoghurt, my honest advice is to stop all dairy altogether and look for an alternative milk that has the nutrients she needs.

Give her completely DF food and milk for at least 2 weeks and then start the milk ladder again and take it very slowly. If she reacts again to the yoghurt then do the same again.

The 2 week break is to give her gut time to heal.

I’m having a reaction to something now and just can’t figure out what it is and it feels utterly miserable. Your poor DD Flowers

Yes I am now considering the same. Thank you for your advice and best of luck x
