We have an allergy specialist appt on the 12th of June. We have been advised to try DS with something with cooked egg in it before we go.

Does anyone have any tips, e.g what to try him on and how much?

I have no idea about egg allergies but what about a small fairy cake?

Lazycow · 28/05/2008 12:28

Don't most cakes have cooked eggs in them?

Maybe a mouthful of cake - Would work for me any way

No tips on what to give him I'm afraid but I would suggest doing what I intend to do with Dd1 with peanuts. I'm planning on pulling into the hospital car park and trying her on peanut butter there! That way if she has a reaction I'm nearby help. Hope it goes well

That was our plan too, to do it in the hospital car park!!

Cake is a good idea as at least he will eat it!!

I was planning on rubbing it on his skin first, then waiting 10 mins, then rubbing it on his lips and then waiting 10 mins, then giving him a tiny bit and waiting 10 mins. Does that sound cautious enough?

Dont know how old your ds is but my dd is 3 and she is allergic to many things including egg, dairy etc.
If it is a proper allergy there will be a skin reaction. Try a tiny bit of raw egg on the hand and see what happens. If you are confident there is no reaction then I would go for them trying a tiny bit of a fairy cake.

Good Luck

please dont home test with out immunologist agreeing.

even if you are outside the hosptial. sometimes ,even then , it may take a while for them to help you.

no. makes me shudder to think of it.

no, no, no, no.

Is your DS allergic to egg? has he had a reaction before?

My son is allergic to egg and had a bad reaction 9 years ago, his yearly prick tests have always shown positive except for the last one, we are awating an appointment to have him egg challenged in hospital... I wouldn't feel happy doing it at home!

IMO its very odd to be told to try egg outside a hospital environment. In our experience it is normal for all challenges to be done under medical supervision in hospital. If you are doing it then be aware that children often grow out of cooked egg allergy before raw egg. And by cooked, it means very well cooked. When both dds had their challenges it was what the nurses described as 'crispy omlet'!!!

My ds has just had his yearly skin prick tests and is still very allergic to egg.
We have been told to try very well cooked egg (ie cake/yorkshire pudding - not cooked egg on it's own) at home in VERY small amounts and too see how this goes. BUT I had told them he had egg in well cooked things before we found out he was allergic.
Since finding out he was allergic to eggs I stopped everything with egg in it.
The tiniest amount of raw egg and he reacts very badly.
She did say once his skin prick tests come back with a negative result then they will do the food challenge in hospital and only then!
In the meantime I will try the smallest amount of cake but will have the antihistamine at the ready just in case.

trixymalixy · 05/06/2008 12:26

he's never had egg before. It just came up as something he was allergic to in his skin prick tests.

Maybe i should phone the hospital and ask as it was the dietician that said we should try DS on something with cooked egg in before our next appointment.

I would definitely ask the hospital first because your ds has never had a reaction to eggs (as you say you found out after testing) - you don't know how he'd react.

My ds was given scrambled egg at his nursery when he was 12 months and thats how we found out about his allergy - very scary as his lips swelled followed by him needing adrenalin injection as it started to affect his breathing. Don't want to scare you but please be aware of the facts from the hospital before attempting it and always carry an antihistamine just in case.

On a good note, my ds had a small cake a couple of days ago and didn't react to it at all but as I said before even touching raw egg gives him a very bad reaction. It's wierd.

They do say he will grow out of it, lets hope so.

My LO is nearly 6 and still allergic to egg - though for some reason he can tolerate it in Yorkshire Puddings (just gives him a rash on his left earlobe ???) the hospital advised me to keep him away from egg till he is 8 .....
