I’ve always had a few allergies and intolerances which have got worse as I’ve got older (61 now)
I went gluten free 15 years ago - dairy free 18 months ago and have been doing FODMAP since then too to try and help my severe IBS
Last week I had a severe reaction to something I’d eaten - violently sick, watery stools, intense itching, severe hives, dry mouth, tight chest with difficulty breathing and swelling to throat then passed out
My GP was very concerned and said I needed an urgent referral to immunology for epi pen as a second reaction could be much worse and even fatal
I got an e letter today for my URGENT immunology referral - it’s for June 2026! What on earth can I do? It really scared me as I was home alone and could have not been found for hours

Contact GP again, explain the wait time. I'm pretty certain the GP can prescribe a EpiPen in the meantime.

Your gp can prescribe an EpiPen

WonderingWanda · 30/06/2025 22:16

Get the gp to prescribe an epipen and also get one of those bracelets to show your medical condition.

Scampuss · 30/06/2025 22:16

Was an ambulance called/were you seen in A&E? If so, they should have discharged you with EpiPens.

Regarding the referral, you could go private if you can afford it.

And please read up on the signs of anaphylaxis and call an ambulance asap if there's a next time.

This is what happened with our son and we waited 10 months for our NHS appointment but we were not prepared to have a 7 month old with serious allergies and take the risk of not knowing what they were or having an epi pen. Unfortunately that meant we had to pay to go private. It was worth it though and we saw the same consultant privately that we now see through the NHS(and are now in the NHS system).

it’s pretty shit though - we left hospital and were like now what and all the GP did was refer. We do get our EpiPens through the GP now but they did not prescribe initially.

I contacted my GP today and they were not happy that their urgent referral had been ignored - they are doing some sort of letter to hospital to point out that they are ignoring their own established protocols and guidelines to try and hurry things up - said hopefully this will done by Friday n should hear something within 10 working days of that
