Hi, my 4 year old is dairy intolerant - does anyone know if I can get fresh dairy free/lactose free sour cream please? I have googled and checked various supermarket websites but unable to see any.

He loves Mexican food but he loved having sour cream with his tacos before we figured out his intolerance!

I’m Norfolk/cambs area.

thanks in advance

Dairy free and lactose free are different just in case you were unsure.

Oatly do a sour cream one. But we use coconut collaborative yogurt in place of sour cream in mexican food.

thank you! I’ll look out for this.

Tbh I’m not sure which he is.. he was cheese intolerant from around 1 years old, but has recently started complaining of tummy aches and had loose stools so we’ve put him on lacto free milk, and dairy free yoghurt and ice cream etc and he seems to be okay again!

Well he either can't tolerate the lactose (sugars) in milk or the proteins. It's important to work it out because lactose intolerance has different symptoms and is generally easier to manage because you can still eat baked in dairy or take lactase tablets.

You probably want to remove all dairy, get symptoms under control and then test lactose free products. Then you can try the milk or lactose ladders to see where his tolerance currently is.
Cows milk protein allergy/intolerance is more common in babies and young children compared to lactose intolerance but they can still get lactose intolerance so I'd start assuming its a reaction to the protein and then do a test if they are ok with the lactose free products which have milk sugars removed but still have the proteins

To your original question Oatly has some good dairy free products, I'm not sure if they have a sour cream but they have a crème fraiche and a greek yoghurt. My daughter can't have the crème fraiche due to other allergies but we use the greek yoghurt in place of any dairy based yoghurt or cream. It's close enough for us.
Soya is a good dairy replacement, my daughter has a soya allergy so I'm not familiar with these products. If you are on Facebook there are some good cmpa groups and they are very knowledgeable. I've found other dairy free mums incredibly knowledgeable on alternative products!

I would use lactose free yoghurt (ours is from Sainsbury’s) with a squeeze of lime or lemon juice. But tbh we are lazy and just have plain yoghurt

If it's lactose intolerance then Tesco do a lactose free plain yoghurt.

Oatly do a nice oat based crême fraiche.

Cathedral City do a decent lactose free cheddar.

Waitrose do lactose free feta, and halloumi.

You can also buy lactase tablets and they work well for foods, less so for milky liquids that pass through quickly.

Goat and sheep's cheese or yogurts have a different type of lactose that some people tolerate better.

You don’t need lactose free cheddar. Hard cheese is naturally very low in lactose. As is butter.

My DS uses tablets now for his lactose intolerance which were recommended by my nephew. This means he can now eat pizza again.

Tesco do a great lactose free Greek yogurt and lactose free milk.

I have used lactose free drops in milk but not sure they’d work in sour cream

WearyAuldWumman · 04/06/2025 02:34

This might not help, but I use Lactojoy tablets when I take Greek yoghurt. (I drink Oatly milk.)

ETA Amazon has the tablets. I tired Holland and Barret's own make, but they didn't work for me.

Lavendersong · 04/06/2025 14:05

These are the tablets and drops DS uses and have worked well for him

Bought on Amazon.

Maybe you don't, but I very much do!
