I « cannot » eat oats

For the past 20 years I have tried several times to eat oats as porridge, overnight oats and now baked oats, but with porridge and overnight oats I had sudden cramps then watery diarrhoea every time, and now with baked oats (admittedly the first time I have tried them) I had stomach pain, but not bloating, then diarrhoea which was sticky and smelly.

I thought /hoped that baking the oats would be ok as even though I eat them very rarely I have never had a problem with granola, granola bars or flapjacks.

I don’t have any food allergies other than a slight intolerance to peanuts if I eat too many (get watery diarrhoea). I never get bloated by food.

I am just a bit disappointed as hoped baked oats could be the one of the answers for breakfast protein post-menopause.

Have you tried the gluten free dairy free oats? Just incase it's one of those giving you the trouble

YourSignalFadedIntoAnotherWorld · 29/05/2025 11:47

I have done a lot of research into my own health issues and I cannot eat grains at all but one thing I learned about oats is that of all the grains, they absorb the most glyphosate so if you want to eat them, maybe try organic if you haven't already.

Thank you both and sorry not to have specified, yes, in the past have tried organic and gluten-free, and the ones I’ve used here for the baked oats are both.

I didn’t realise there are dairy-free oats (Sorry if I am being an idiot here, how would oats have dairy in? Cross-contamination?) Never had any issues with dairy.

Alot of oats are used for porridge so alot have milk in already. My DS has CMPA so I've read so many packets 😅

They give me a godawful stomach ache. I am not gluten intolerant. Can't safely eat beans/pulses, either, and am dairy intolerant. 85% of healthy eating advice is inaccessible to me.

I do sometimes make porridge with wheat, buckwheat or rye flakes. Mainly, though, I live on food that is not a brownish mush 😆

Urgh I can’t eat them in any quantity (they give me heartburn and mess up my blood sugar) although I’m finding them useful for lowering my cholesterol in combination with other soluble fibre. Porridge instead of eggs every morning helps too I expect.
I make an almond porridge with one part oats to three parts ground almonds, toasted in a pan in larger quantities and stored in the fridge. Staves off hunger for absolute ages compared to the regular oat porridge I used to eat.

Thanks everyone, I checked the packet earlier and it says 100% oats, may contain traces of mustard.

Went out for a stroll and shit myself entirely unexpectedly after about 6-700 metres. Had to walk home as discreetly as possible, stinking, and jump in the shower. Am staying close to the toilet as can still feel it sloshing about in my guts.

Feel such an idiot for convincing myself that baked oats would be any different!
