Allergies or something else?

So DH has extreme congestion (think snorty breathing - poor description but you know what I mean) and little patches of red hives across his arms. He's had an antihistamine (benadryl) this morning and last night, but it doesn't seem to be shifting this. He was very, very congested and blocked up last night, but seems marginally better today. He does not seem ill, his 'whoop' scores are fine, resting heart rate on Garmin fine, blood sugars (he is T1D) fine, no temp not even a minor one (temp is 36.5), no sore throat, aches, pains or cough. All these things normally give an indication when he is sickening for or has something.

He was out in the garden all weekend and Friday evening; mowing the lawns, digging all sorts, heaving out bamboo roots, shifting the most enormous amount of bark chipping and the list goes on. We moved at the end of Jan and the jungle garden needs sorting so he has cracked on. He has then walked to and from the station on his commute to work (approx 1 mile each way) so potentially more pollen exposure.

Given his total refusal to speak to the GP as he would be 'wasting time' does this sound reasonable to be caused by allergen exposure/extreme hay fever? Especially as we moved from a flat so this is all new exposure in the garden

Yes, sounds like allergies. Maybe try ceterizine or Fexodenadine which are stronger and I feel work better than benadryl. My DC has this at the moment.

Thank you for this, he went to the pharmacy today and was given some Allevia which I think is fexofenadine. The pharmacist did think it was allergies and due to prolonged exposure this weekend to things like the bamboo, suggested as he has no other symptoms and allergies are apparently generally high right now.

He was given a strong dose with the 180mg version. He's still congested so hopefully the Allevia kicks in overnight and with another dose in the morning he will feel a bit more improvement.

I’m on Fenodexadine and it’s great. I think the pollen is super high at the moment around us (semi-rural with not much air pollution) and people who don’t normal suffer are having symptoms.

You can try steam for his congestion, usually best done twice a day.

Wash his bedding at 60 degrees and dry it inside and suggest having a shower and washing his hair before bed so that he isn’t being all of the pollen that’s stuck to him during the day into his sleeping area.

As well as taking antihistamines he could benefit with a Nasal decongestant spray
