Sesame Allergy?

Does anyone have any experience of sesame allergy?

I'm worried that my LO (2) may have a sesame allergy but her reactions are very inconsistent. She seems absolutely fine with houmous and has eaten it regularly since weaning, which suggests it's not a sesame allergy. But every time she has a dish cooked with sesame oil she gets very red blotchy face/cheeks and hands. She also says she feels itchy, especially her hands and has had a noticeable change in her mood very soon after, suddenly getting either very irritable or very sleepy. No breathing symptoms. I think maybe some stomach pain as on one occasion she woke up inconsolable but couldn't say what was wrong the evening after, but stools seem normal. I feel like it can't be a sesame allergy if its only the oil she reacts to but then I don't understand the reaction she has. I'm not sure whether to cut it out from her diet or not.

Any advice would be appreciated!

With other allergies, the “rawness” or “processing” of an allergen can make a difference. For eg roasted peanuts can cause a more serious reaction than raw peanuts, according to my daughter’s consultant; conversely, raw egg can be worse than baked egg. So I don’t think the tolerance of one is reassuring, though I don’t know the situation re sesame.

Sleepiness can be a sign of a very serious reaction so please do consult GP and avoid all sesame for now. It is on my child’s anaphylaxis action plan.

Hopefully in your child’s case it’s been more about the antihistamine or something but assume worst, hope for best; if in doubt re a reaction always get emergency care.

Finally - my youngest get child had a sesame allergy as a baby but grew out of it by school. I hope you have good news too.
