Suddenly developed an intolerance?

I'll try and keep this short and sweet!! Wondering if anyone else' child has been through similar and what the outcome was.

So my DS, just turned 2, out of blue had a day of very watery, frequent poops about a month ago, I thought he had a stomach bug but there was no vomiting or temp etc! For the following week he continued to have lose nappies but less frequent, maybe twice a day so OH and I thought ok, he's probably had a stomach bug, his stomach needs to settle, let's cut dairy out for a few days and see if that makes a difference (we had similar issues when he started cows milk but this settled) after almost a week no dairy things were back to normal so we gave him some cows milk. That night he vomited, just the once, no other symptoms so we were like ok.. maybe too much too soon .. back to the oat milk! Fine again for probably a week and I put a little bit of cows milk in with his mash potato that evening and the next day, very frequent, watery poops again so we haven't given him anymore since, this was only 2 days ago, things are now calming down but he's still a bit lose!

So my question is, how likely is it he's suddenly developed an intolerance to dairy? How long should we stay dairy free and is this a milk ladder situation?!

It's quite common to develop temporary intolerances after a stomach bug.

You can develop allergies and intolerances at any time of life for no reason. When I was 26 I suddenly.became allergic to a long list of things including my own 5 year old cats I'd raised from being kittens. Also dogs, dust, grass, pollen, peppers and chillis, and some other random things I'd been living around and eating my entire life.

Maybe use those lactose intolerance tablets to see if it's that instead of an allergy. I'd also book a GP appointment for an allergy blood test. Mine showed which things I was allergic too and also how strong the reaction is so I knew which ones were more important to avoid.

Very common and happened to us at 15 months. Usually only lasts 6-8 weeks but ours took 10 months to settle - still reintroducing now v gradually. Probably lactose rather than dairy - which is good as they can have lactose free products. Happy to answer any qs. Lots of helpful stuff online and instagram. Worth speaking to GP as they may do stool sample to rule anything else out.

@Rosiebob
Thank you for this!
I was wondering whether I should make a GP trip so I'll do that.
Would be great if it was just lactose too.
Do these symptoms sound similar to your LO?

@Octavia64 see I'm unsure whether it was a bug or it was a random out of the blue thing, but it could well have been!

He had a mild vomiting bug (was really no big deal wouldn’t have thought much of it) then the poos started! Varied but.. Watery, smelly, mucousy and yellowy (sorry!). It’s also worth looking into toddlers diarrhoea if it doesn’t settle because I think that played a part later for us, his diet was probs a bit too high in fibre at times.
