18 week old prescribed Lansoprazole

Hi all!

I’m going to call the GP for advice tomorrow but I’d thought I’d ask here also to see if anyone has been in a similar boat.

My DS (18 weeks old) has had nothing but issues since birth, CMPA being one of them. To cut a long story short he has been on Neocate LCP for almost 3 months. The last few weeks his silent reflux has been awful whilst all other symptoms of CMPA have completely disappeared.

on Friday, he was prescribed Lansoprazole which I started to administer on Saturday, his reflux disappeared in an instance and he was so happy Saturday & Sunday. Since yesterday he has been pretty upset on and off and it appears to be tummy issues although difficult to say, his poo this evening has been super runny (sorry TMI). In between his uncontrollable crying episodes, he seems perfectly happy.

I understand that it is early days on a brand new medicine but I was wondering if anyone has experienced similar with their LO’s and this medicine? Sorry if I’ve unnecessarily rambled on.

My son had lansoprazole after a horrible time with omeprazole. It was life changing but he did have about a two week period of settling down, which I think is normal for this type of medication. Unless you think something isn't right (and worth speaking with the GP to check anyway), I'd persevere for a little bit to let the medication settle. I'd probably set a deadline in your head and revisit then if no improvement. I kept waiting for omeprazole to work and it just never did so wish I'd had a cut off instead of continuing on for months.

Ahh thank you so much for your response. That does make a lot of sense. The medicine is working wonderfully, after so many nights worrying over the reflux, it’s been a huge relief.

This morning he has been quite unsettled shortly after a feed, I tried everything to settle him and have just given him some more milk, he seems fine now, so I’m wondering if the medication is making him more hungry, he is still only on 5oz every few hours because of his reflux, so maybe his tummy is settled and he’s no longer satisfied. I’m hoping this is the reason 🙏🏼🤞🏼

@HappyWelsh it's really so difficult to know, it's such a guessing game but hopefully it works as well for you as it did us. My son was breastfed so don't know what he was taking but I remember him feeding constantly, I do think there's a bit of discomfort from the "acid battle" until the medicine settles and milk helps with that. Really hoping you see a positive improvement quickly.

So far so good🤞🏼 he’s settled much better today thankfully. I upped his feeds today and he seems much happier, so I’m guessing (and hoping) that he’s just now more hungry and I can comfortably up his feeds without worrying. I’m glad to hear that it worked for you, it’s horrible isn’t it? I have older girls and everything was so straight forward and easy, this little guy has had me constantly on my toes with worry🤭

It's really horrible and so many people tell you it's normal, they'll outgrow it. It might be common but it's not normal and it's painful unless treated properly. I'm currently pregnant with number 2 and have the worst acid reflux. It's relentless and making me so unwell, I can only imagine what it's like for a baby. I'm hoping number 2 is reflux free 🤞
