Allergy or Febrile Seizure

Hi,

My DD is 3 next week and today she had a funny turn.

She was fine all morning, she went to the shops and bought a chocolate mouse with a liquorice lace tail. She ate this after her lunch, 20 mins later she went vacant, came out in a rash and went very floppy. We rang 999, when the paramedics checked her over, her temperature was up so they took us to A&E. She was sick in the ambulance and at hospital, then she was fine and back to her usual self. She's had toast tonight and kept it down.

The hospital has said it was either an allergic reaction or a febrile seizure.
Just to note it was her first time having sweets, she's had chocolate before.

Has anyone experience anything similar?

Thanks for reading.

I’d say allergy because of the rash but the Dr was presumably best placed to advise.

@timetobegin I would say op did the right thing, vacant and floppy is a red flag in kids isn't it ?

If my child went floppy I would call an ambulance.

@willquestionwith Yes you asked if it was a “red flag” (a term which I don’t really understand in this context), so I responded with what I would do in hopes that would satisfy.

Again I’m not sure what “OP did?” Is actually questioning so I’ve tried to explain.

What’s your point?

Yes we called 999 and the ambulance took us in. The hospital said they are not sure if it was an allergic reaction or a febrile seizure.

I posted just to see if anyone had any experience of this happening to them.

Thanks

I'd say allergy, the floppiness and vomit is classic FPIES and is sudden blood pressure changes.

Febrile convulsions could look just the same (I have seen many) One of my children vomits though usually before the seizure. My thoughts would be that if I wanted to try a possible trigger food again I’d make sure we were near a hospital (ie not on holiday somewhere remote or on a long walk). Horrid for you all. ☕️

Thanks for your reply.

She's just done a 💩 on her potty and it wasn't her usual consistency. Almost like somethings not agreed with her.

Will see how she goes.

Thanks

Temperature pushes towards viral illness with febrile convulsion. Rash could be either. Gut symptoms could be either.

So since posting this, on Tuesday DD had diarrhoea and last night she was sick. Really hard to tell if it was a reaction or not. The hives rash she came out in is making me sway towards this theory.

I'm going to ring the GP tomorrow to see if they can help any further. She is due to start preschool in a couple of months and I'm worried about it happening again.
