I'm 42 - could I have got hayfever for the first time?

I thought I was getting a cold on saturday but I've noticed today that the sneezing is much worse if I am by an open window (like now when I am trying to study!!)

I am very blocked up, my eyes feel stingy and I am sneezing and blowing my nose constantly. Unfortunately I have nothing in the house suitable tot ake if it is hayfever but if opinion things it mgiht be then I shall endeavour to get something to try.

I just rather thought that if I was going to get hayfever then I would have got it before now. I know 42 isn't ancient but even so

TIA

I lived in Spain for 6 or 7 years before I suddenly got it in my early 30's. Now I get it every year. It's the damn olive trees.

kind of not what i wanted to hear but thanks for the replies .

Might there be something around at the moment though that i'm reacting to just now and I'll only get it for this period and never again. Is that how hayfever works? Sorry if it seems a daft question but I have no experience of it at all.

depends where you live. If its country could be something a local farmer has planted. However whatever it is you're always likely to react to it now. If you're lucky it could be a tree pollen and not grass pollen (shorter pollen season, I think).

There may be a pollen-count website that tells you which ones are high at the moment and how long they will be in flower. At least then you can be warned in advance and know how long it'll go on for. There is one for Spain where I am.

I only started getting hayfever when I was early 30s too. Pain in the neck, but, luckily for me it only last for about 6wks at the very start of the season. Still haven't figured out the cause yet tho. Strangely enough I love the smell of fresh cut grass, never affects me.

I'm thinking now it might not be. I went to bed early but have come back downstairs as I can't breathe properly - my nose is just totally blocked. I have vicks vapour rub on my feet, my back and my chest. I'm lying on two pillows. Surely if it was hayfever it would have eased off by now. I think perhaps it is just a good old fashioned cold!

IIRC the pollen count is higher at night. I am also blocked up and it's definately not a cold.

If you get some antihistamine nose spray and eye drops you'll know which it is in a matter of hours.

I got it in my late thirties, which is great when you consider I live just down the road from a field of rape.

Chocolateteapot · 07/05/2008 10:31

Yes unfortunately you can get it later. It is said to work on 7 year cycles, I was a bit dubious about that but the year DD reached 7, in it kicked.

My new find of last year is Lloyds Allergy reliever, google it.

I got it for the first time in my mid 30s after the birth of my third child. Got an oral allergy to apples at the same time too...
