Gluten and oat allergy in eight month old

Hi all,

Just after some inspiration really, we think my 8 month old is allergic to gluten and oats. He had a really bad reaction recently to gluten free oats, where we had to have an ambulance out and he gets very sick off gluten. We’re waiting to see an paediatrician and we’ve been given an appointment for August, even though he’s dropped three centiles, but that’s a whole other story.

In the meantime I was after some baby friendly gluten free meal ideas. Mainly breakfast as pretty much all cereals contain gluten or oats. We can do gluten free bread and eggs but I don’t want him to have that everyday.

Also, any dinner suggestions? Ideally we’d like him to eat the same meals as us blended up so we’re having a lot of rice and potato dinners.

I’m completely new to adjusting a diet based on allergies so any tips or pointers you have would be greatfully received. You just don’t realise how prominent gluten is!!

Thank you!

For breakfast, you can use quinoa or rice flakes to make porridge, and there are lots of GF cereals without oats - puffed rice, Mesa Sunrise flakes (amaranth), Nutribrix (sorghum), GF cornflakes come to mind straight away. Its easiest at first to shop online as you can look at all the ingredients at your leisure. I like Ocado for GF as they have such a huge range and their filters are good.
For dinner, GF pasta is almost always oat free (but obv check), and you can get GF stock cubes, gravy, soy sauce and so on. So apart from pastry/ bread based things it is pretty straightforward to do dinners.
What sort of thing would you normally have for dinner? Happy to suggest products to tweak for GF

When my daughter started weaning our paediatrician suggest using pudding rice in place of oats for making porridge more rice pudding and than porridge.
Sainsbury's do a brown rice pasta which is gluten free and for us it was the closest to regular pasta.

We have the allergy free baby and toddler recipe book which has recipes that are free from the top14 allergens with tips about which ones could be added in to the dishes

Soya sauce - look for Tamari instead or coconut aminos
Cornflakes - Whole Earth Cornflakes closest we've enjoyed to the Kellogg's/nestle brand (also no nut)

Maize porridge is a favourite here. Buckwheat is a bit more of a challenging flavour. Agree with amaranth/quinoa with rice flakes. Nutribrix has been enjoyed.

Ocado v v good Here but also worth checking out M&S made without wheat range, they have some good bits

Check out arepa recipes - v Handy to take with you out and about.

Birds eye potato waffles are gluten free
Schar do frozen pizzas (maybe for later) and bases. Fish fingers from birds eye also good as is the breaded fish fillet

Pretty sure there's a GF tortilla bases too as well as bagels but I've not had much joy with those here.

Most sausages in shops are now gluten free usually chickpea/cornflour/pea protein used to bind.

Pasta - so many excellent brands now, in particular Rummo is v good but we also like the own brand version at Sainsbury's.

Vermicelli rice noodles or similar if you want a stir fry.

It's a journey, start small and also good to think of this as a way to explore new diets!
