Protopic Ointment Reaction ?

Hi there

Jjust curious to see does anyone use Protopic for AtopEczema on their face ?

I have been using it successfully for years but I’m currently experiencing redness , swelling on face , and general discomfort - pure miserable .

I am very concerned as what was a super ointment on my face is now feeling like it’s burning. I had severe eczema years ago until I used this .

After seeking advice , it was suggested it could be Rosacea and try creams / tablets for that condition for a trial .
Im just not sure to be honest…

Any eczema sufferer ever notice an intolerance to protopic ?

Have multiple allergies and suffering with allergic rhinitis on top of this at the same .

Thank you !

I wonder if it's over-use? I was told by the dermatologist to only use it when a flare had subsided after use of weak steroid ointment on face for about 2 weeks to kind of deaden allergic reactions whilst the skin layers underneath were fully healed.

Ps same as you re allergies and rhinitis. Been reading up on vitamin d deficiency so am taking it year round now. Currently have one eye half closed from itching it! Also wondering if you have a bit of active eczema and therefore the protopic is feeling like it's burning. I got very confused how to use protopic until I was referrred to a dermatologist who told me how to use it ie not on active eczema

Oh thanks so much . I’m only just home from the dermatologist. I was just a bit muddlled with the appointment.
Was told it’s rosacea possibly but I’m feeling all the symptoms I had years ago .
I also use Eumovate if needed and that calms it .
Yea I take vitamin D , antihistamines, have had a week of oral steroids still miserable tonight .
And allergic rhinitis on top of it ….
I can’t use any products on my face , no makeup absolutely nothing so Im raging there’s now a problem .
Face above all places 😢
I also have Elidel but it’s quite dry but doesn’t burn . It might work for you

Is miserable isn't it. Presume you take beconase or equivalent? I stopped that about a month as I was told it can affect eyesight but feeling like I had a permanent cold was worse so am back on an equivalent by Otrivine. Like you I use eumovate on facial eczema and take fexafenadine daily and top that up with piriton if needed. Central heating and dust rising off radiators is what's made my eye close up plus stress. I also take turmeric, zinc and flaxseed oil for omega 3 as no fish in my diet. Do you have enough omega 3? Have just ordered a night cream called Sebamed anti dry, has yet to arrive but cetaphil night isn't cutting it anymore for enough moisture. This is all coinciding with latter stages of menopause- not sure what age you are but the dwindling oestregen despite hrt seems to deplete you of oils and moisture all round!

Re makeup, during covid I was relieved to wear a mask as I looked like a boxer for about 2 years when I had a really bad bout. La Roche Posay cicaplast baume helps me when skin is swollen and red but not broken as such but you'd still need moisturiser. Makeup wise I use Bareminerals complexion rescue and concealer but am having trouble with eyeliner and mascara lately. Have ordered Bell hypoallergenic mascara to try when this has healed, as their eyeshadow is ok, but am going to try a cream based eyeshadow so particles don't fall in!

seoda24 · 05/11/2024 22:04

Oh you poor thing . I’m sounding very similiar to you .
take Nasonex daily . Took Otrivine sinus spray randomly in desperation tonight and I feel I can breathe better …
I have allergic asthma controlled well with x2 prescribed anhistamines the one you mentioned and singulair .

I don’t take supplements apart from vitamin. D . Find it hard enough to make sure and take what I have to !!!

If required I take Betnesol prescribed for eyes but they are okay so far .

I have this condition early 30s now 10 years later tormented this last week .

It began to act up April ….

So I’m biting bullet coming off protopic ….

Just don’t feel it’s rosacea !

Oh I see your make up post . Ended in out of hours afters La Roche P an awful reaction .
Thats why I’m panicking - my only ointment that worked was the protopic .
I think I have tried everything ever made over the years !!!! Drawers full !!! And then binned

Oh no re la roche P, that's awful. Same as you, tried most creams on market and dont get me started in eye drops and eye ointments and their active percentage ingredients! Asthma here too, full dark triad lol but under control. If i was swollen and mid flare I would use fucibet with the antibiotic in in case it was slightly infected,Then as it goes down use eumovate then once it's healed, use protopic for 2 weeks to stop any itching whilst other skin layers healing. That was what the derm made me do after 2 desperate years of the last bad flare.

seoda24 · 05/11/2024 22:35

That’s exactly what I have been doing apart from protopic full time when I was “ good and under control “.What moisturiser do you use daily ? You are lucky you can tolerate one after getting it under control 👏
Am worried already about puffy eyes in morning - only you would understand !!!’ And now ted face lovely mix

I had been using cetaphil night cream successfully near eyes but then had issue. So now I'm putting a bit of castor oil on wet fingers and smoothing that under the eyebrow and under the eyebag, then using cetaphil on forehead and cheeks. Also been vaselining eyelashes in case I allergic to eyelash mites (thinking I'll stop them breathing by greasing them, silly logic probably but also because I can get a slight mascara effect if you then flick them upwards). Do you find that once you have a bad flare up you know you're in for the long haul? And could stress be exacerbating it? I've had 2 x nearly 2 year long bouts where I never thought I'd be able look my normal self- both corresponded to times of real stress alongside normal triggers like pollen, dust, central heating etc.

Re puffiness under eyes, can you tolerate 2 spoons that have been in the freezer? have done that in the evenings sometimes wrapped in a tissue. Embarrassment at work wise I just went full disclosure and pre-empted any comments/looks by just saying scuse my face it's eczema (obviously I just wanted to die but when it's over many months of doctors trying to help then dermatologists you just have to get on with it grr). Do you find you say no to social stuff more? No-one really understands the full impact of living with it. When I get that Sebamed cream in the post I will feedback on it for you. Also- I use incidecoder to look up ingredients in creams and makeup- gives you some idea of irritants like mica, benzyl alcohol etc. I recently ordered an ELF mascara for when things are back to normal as that was low in nasties.

Hi there so basically once it’s calmed you’re putting Protopic on skin that looks ok (but is still inflamed underneath)? do you use protopic as maintenance too?

BellaPommefritio · 29/01/2026 16:36

no, only for about 2 weeks I was told

FlowerFairyDaisy · 29/01/2026 16:45

Lifelong eczema sufferer on and off (54). I have used topical steroids all my life (on and off). GP recently prescribed Protopic for a full body flare up (possibly hormonal, post-menopause related, who knows?).

I had read many great things about Protopic but I cannot get past the burning, intense itching and just general horrible greasy discomfort of it.

I have scaled everything back and gone back to a mild steroid and some moisturisers that I seem to be get on with. Worked out during this whole year long flare up that I am intolerant of emollients containing paraffin and just not great with anything that contains 'sealants' and many eczema treatments do.
