Allergic Asthma

Has anyone ever dealt with allergic Asthma? I've had a cat for over a year now and I have had allergies ever since I've had him. But I managed by taking allergy meds, using a humidifier and other things. Now last month, I noticed I was wheezing, short of breath, and feeling like I may have an asthma attack. I really don't want to give my cat away, me and my child love him, he has been with us since he was a baby, and he is a part of our family. I can deal with the allergies but asthma I can't. I am struggling with what I should do. I have an appointment with my Doctor soon. But I don't want to be on allergy meds plus asthma meds.

Why not, if they make your life better.

Asthma is potentially deadly. Which would you rather: keep the cat, feel constantly ill, and risk leaving your dc an orphan; get rid of the cat: or try to find a way to keep the cat and your life?

BTW I am on both allergy meds and asthma meds, and my quality of life is hugely enhanced by them.

Yes I know asthma can be deadly and that is why I'm contemplating what I should do. Even if I get on allergy and asthma meds I might still have an attack. I don't want to have asthma for the rest of my life I'm hoping that these symptoms will go away.

My son has allergic asthma. The asthma medications have saved his life and help keep him safe in future. He’s allergic to dust mites and dogs. I clean regularly to improve his dust mite allergy symptoms; we have to avoid all dogs and enclosed spaces with them inside.

We found out he had asthma when he had a sudden, severe attack. Antihistamines did not prevent this attack from happening. He’d had a runny nose and coughing for a while beforehand, we thought it was the usual autumn/winter viruses. Now we know that was allergies and asthma. This is so common it has a name, they call it the “allergic march” - the tendency for allergic rhinitis (the sneezing, watery eyes, “hay fever” type symptoms) to become asthma.

Now we avoid his triggers, he has a daily preventer inhaler and carries his reliever inhaler with him. The preventer inhaler works to reduce inflammation in the airways. The inflammation makes them narrow and more reactive to tighten further (an attack). Yes, you may still have an attack whilst on these medications but your daily symptoms will stop and the likelihood and severity of an attack will be reduced compared to not taking them because it treats the underlying inflammation.

Please prioritise your health. Nobody wants asthma but doing nothing these symptoms will not go away and they may get worse.

How long until your GP appointment? Calling 111 or visiting a walk in centre, will get you help sooner. Then see the GP for a follow up. If you feel worse, for example finding it hard to breathe, can’t talk in full sentences etc, call 999.

I have an appointment in a couple of weeks. Today and yesterday haven't been so bad thankfully, even though I was wheezing this morning. I am glad to hear that your son's asthma is under control. I hope that antihistamines work for me, but if not I will have to see what I can do. I so don't want to give my cat away, but if that is the case. I hope that I can do an open adoption where I get pictures of him and will be able to visit him at least a couple of times a year.

You can get a special diet for the cat which stops you being so allergic - sounds wild but it really works! Massively helped my allergies. It’s www.allergyuk.org/our-services/allergyuk-products/pro-plan-liveclear/

@OneDandyTurtle Thank You, I will look into purchasing and see how it works out. Appreciate It
