Toddler dairy allergy returned?!

My DS was diagnosed with CMPA at 7 weeks and put on to aptamil Pepti 1 which worked really well for 5 months and then suddenly he had terrible diarrhea and bloody stools. We then moved him to neocate which worked well. When he turned 1, I done the milk ladder and by 13/14 months he was completely OK on dairy - cows milk, everything. Having dairy every single day.

The last few weeks he’s had random bouts of sickness and diarrhea (some normal stools some really loose) - he’s just stared nursery so I assumed he’s been catching bugs. But last night he had terrible diarrhea and projectile vomit after having yoghurt. No other symptoms of being unwell and hasn’t been sick since. I’ve switched him straight back to Soya milk and just been to the shops for all the (expensive!) dairy free stuff. I’m hoping it will improve his symptoms - my question is, can a dairy allergy flare up again in this way?! He has been completely symptom free for 5/6 months (now 19 months old).

Sorry for the long post, I am just absolutely baffled that he’s been fine for so long and now suddenly has all the symptoms again!

Yep mine did. Looking back I think I was always feeling a little rough and wasn't actually tolerating the milk that well.

I hope he improves quickly Flowers

@PolaroidPrincess Thank you 💕

He’s such a happy little boy - it’s always quite hard to know when he’s struggling. Even with teething, he’s never really upset or seemingly in pain. I’m worried that this could now be a life long dairy intolerance but i guess only time will tell!

It might be worth ringing Allergy UK's Helpline in the morning and see what they can advise?

The first bout of sickness could have been a bug. Stomach bugs can cause secondary dairy allergies and may have reduced his tolerance to dairy again. Cut it out for a few weeks and then try the dairy ladder again to see where his current tolerance is.
You might find that he tolerates dairy better when well and then goes sensitive again when unwell. Outgrowing it the first time by 13 months is great and really promising. My daughter is 4 and still reacts to crumbs if malted milk. It's only in the last few months that they have been raising the idea that she might not outgrow her allergies/ only have partial tolerance. Our long term aim is baked dairy. My mum can only tolerate dairy up to cooked cheese and my sisters random vomiting attacks only stopped when she went vegan so we have a family history of dairy issues

@Superscientist Thank you - that’s really interesting! He’s been sick a couple more times since I posted and having on/off loose stools and is SO gassy - which was one of his big symptoms to dairy allergy. He’s been off all dairy now for 4 days and no improvements as of yet but I suspect that whatever virus he has is still lingering as he still has a runny nose. Process of elimination I guess and as you say, do the milk ladder again in a few weeks and see where we are. It’s a minefield 😅
