Onion intolerance solved

Messen · 24/08/2024 23:30

A minor and possibly niche public service announcement follows ….

Have had a lifetime onion, garlic and leek intolerance which causes many issues as I love these foods.

3 months ago I started eating a lot of fermented food -kefir, kive kinchi etc.

This Seems to have cured my onion intolerance. Tomorrow I’m going to brave beetroot which I absolutely love but haven’t been able to eat for years.

Sharing just in case it could help others who love a good onion ;)

Well done with altering your gut biome. Did you find that the fermented foods made you bloated or upset your stomach initially?

MargotMoon · 24/08/2024 23:50

I think this has happened to me! I stopped eating onions a few years ago bc they gave me cramps/bad wind. I've been making my own sauerkraut for about a year now and recently have accidentally had onions in a few things without taking my usual IBS medication first and it seems to have been ok. Need to do some more experimenting now to be sure!

Wonder if Kumbucha or probiotics have the same effect then. I absolutely detest those fermented foods but love leeks and garlic bread so might be worth a try. Although I have been fine on beetroot. Is it the pickled version you struggle with or fresh as well?

Yes I had a bit of an upset stomach for a short while but nothing too grim.

That’s how I discovered it too. Accidental onioning, no symptoms at all. I then ate two whole bhajis and … nothing. A miracle.

Kombucha is the same principle I think, just need to make sure it hasn’t been pasteurized I believe although I am no expert at all. With beetroot it doesn’t matter whether it is baked, pickled. 30 mins later nuclear explosion ….i haven’t had any today in the end as I went out for lunch but will try next week when working at home.

Thank you, I'll check on that. Good luck with the beetroot as that is one vegetable I would really miss if I couldn't have.

Wow that’s great. I now have a new intolerance to onion and garlic. I’m now dairy intolerant to so can’t have keifer and most fermented foods and drinks I’m intolerant to an ingredient so my search to help my biome is still ongoing. I drank kombucha and had a day of crams and D.

RandomMess · 18/01/2025 10:50

@Messen was your intolerance worse if those foods were uncooked/lightly cooked?

I seem to be ok with well browned then cooked in a sauce or even caramelised. Cannot eat at all onion powder or reconstituted.

I must get around to trying kefir etc.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 18/01/2025 10:54

I have a sensitive stomach these days and I haven't quite worked out the whole picture of what things trigger it. I don't eat yoghurt or kefir as I seem to be dairy intolerant, but maybe kombucha, sauerkraut or kimchi might do me some good!

handmademitlove · 18/01/2025 11:33

When I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I went onto a low carb diet and one of the positive effects of this was that my daily, onion, garlic intolerance disappeared completely.

Messen · 18/01/2025 17:22

@RandomMess yes, worse if they were uncooked. Same with onion powder.

never did crack the beetroot -a step too far for my biome!

I didn't see this when you first posted it but thank you, I will be giving it a try 🙂

This sounds very FODMAP too which makes sense. Shallots are lower fodmap than onions/garlic/the white end of the leek. Might work on my DH having more fermented stuff!
