Contact hives allergy? (7MO)

Hello,

I was always worried pre starting solids that my baby had CMPA or an egg allergy but we never pinpointed it with elimination. He had some unspecific symptoms (mucus poo, eczema and reflux). The reflux resolved as did the mucus poo mainly.

We had allergy testing which I understand tests for IGE allergies and he was negative for all. We were advised to keep everything in his diet as if non IGE and non severe it’s better to keep the allergens rather than risk more serious allergies developing.

Recently started on solids and so far tested yoghurt a few times and a tiny bit of boiled egg mixed into puree. Both fine.

Today he had an omelette with cheese and butter and had an instant red rash and hives around his mouth (within 5 minutes) and then an upset tummy an hour later. Now confused, is this just a mild IGE reaction? I thought delayed were after 2hrs.

GP wasn’t remotely fussed and didn’t suggest any next steps apart from food diary. Do we just test again? He been pretty irritable this afternoon so keen not to give him things that hurt but don’t know if we should be trying some sort of milk or egg ladder to check his tolerance.

thanks so much,

What did you cook the omelette in? Any kind of oil?
Another possibility is a nickel allergy- is your cutlery 100% steel or nickel plated?

It was in butter and then there was a small bit of cheese in it. I haven’t tested either of these with him seperately but have tested yoghurt which at the time he seemed fine with. Don’t think it was cutlery as he used his hands but good thought!

My daughter has nonIGE allergies and we have to keep them out of her diet as having them in can damage the gut and make her more sensitive to a wider range of foods and can make her allergies more severe. We do the food ladders semi regularly to see what can be tolerated but she still fails on small amounts.
I think I would be getting a second opinion on how to handle food. Also the ige allergy testing is unreliable in young babies and reactions should be trusted over negative skin prick or blood tests.

Well with those ruled out, then I think you may be dealing with some sort of food allergy. Many children with a food allergy get a worse reaction each time, but it starts out mild, sometimes so mild it’s not picked up on standard tests. I’d keep a food journal and photo any/all reactions and push to get the allergy tests done again.
