Ds gets rash/hives where egg touches his skin

Ds is 11 months and I have given him hard boiled egg before and he got a red rash with white bumps (hives?) on his skin where the egg had touched him, so I stopped giving it to him. But he is ok with products with egg in like pasta or eggy bread that I cook myself.

Today he was in my kitchen cupboards and broke some eggs out of the egg box, and though I washed him where the raw egg touched he has got thi same type of rash.

I'm just wondering what it means and should I be doing anything? (Other children don't have allergies).

He also gets this rash where the dog has sniffed him and has touched him, but he doesn't wheeze or show any signs of allergy.
He did have eczema, but it has cleared up now.

I'm also a bit worried about the MMR as I've heard that it's made from an egg base.

Thanks!

Thanks for replies, I didn't know if I should be avoiding anything (apart from eggs ), or should take him to see anyone.

You don't think it will get worse?
Does this mean he's allergic to the dog too?

Sorry for 100 questions!

i just avoid eggs, but dont stress over egg as an ingredient (like cakes)

i assume she will grow out

i wouildnt take him to dr or anything

mayube the dog had been sniffing raw eggs?

my dd now 5, was diagnosed with egg intolerence, after a huge rash cameup all round her mouth the first time I triedher with a bit of scrambled egg. She must have been about a yr old.

Just avoid till older. My dd had to have an egg challenge at local hosp to detect the severity of the allergy. Was fine with boiled egg touching the skin, but got a rash when they tested the raw egg.

Thye told me to avoid everything that had egg in it, but seeing as she ate bugger all it wasn't a prob really!!

nailpolish · 09/04/2008 13:44

avoiding everything that has egg in it rules out a tremendous amount of food

just be relaxed aobut it. as i said i make dd egg white omlettes, she eats cakes, etc

piratecat · 09/04/2008 13:49

absolutely, i agree nailpolish, i was fortunate in that dd's diet consisted at that time of peas, tuna, and rice cakes!!

DD2 has this - reacted to scrambled egg at 10 months old i think.
We had RAST and skin prick test which showed allergy to egg.
However she is fine with egg in cakes, pasta and as an ingredient. I just have to avoid lightly cooked or raw egg e.g. quiche, fried egg, boiled egg etc.

She had eczema as a baby too but stopped when i changed her formula to Babynat. Even now if she has too much cheese/dairy her eczema will flare up but nothing we can't handle.

She had her MMR in hospital as the GP didn't want to do it due to her egg allergy. The hospital said it wasn't necessary as the MMR is no longer cultured in egg. However they did it anyway. No problems.

Apparently it is one of those allergies that they grow out of if the body isn't exposed to it again until ready to handle it. Some (non UK) weaning charts recommend you don't introduce it til after age 2.

I would advise you to seek out medical opinon, as allergies dont often come in ones.

The fact that your child can eat eggs that have been exposed to a high heat ( cakes etc) is hopefull of outgrowing.
Most children out grow egg by 5yrs.

Some take longer, my son only reached your childs stage at 7yrs. totally out grown by 10yrs.

Egg allergy often goes hand in hand with peanut.

So approach with care.

Tapster · 14/04/2008 19:58

Get a peanut allergy test when you get a skin prick test for egg I did for my DD and it was all clear. DD only has an egg allergy but also has ezcema which the allergist said was very related to her egg allergy. She is now 17 months the ezcema seems to have gone and the egg allergy reducing so it does get better. Get a skin prick test it doesn't hurt them.

My son had this reaction to scrambled egg when I was weaning him. He also reacted to peanuts, so I think it may be worth asking gp for advice and maybe referral to have skin tests - at least you then know for definite what you are dealing with.

My daughter (20mo) had an allergic reaction to eggs when I first introduced it around 9 months. Earlier on she seemed to be fine with cakes etc, but has gradually become more sensitive.

I, like others on this thread didn't worry too much and decided to just avoid eggs, nuts etc until she was older.

Last week she was admitted to hospital with asthma like attack. This prompted referral to the hospital allergy clinic for testing.

The prick test showed big egg allergy, but also lesser reactions to nuts, fish, cats, dust mites. They also believe she has food intolerances, esp dairy. She is now on very restrictive diet to ascertain aggravators. She has also been given special formula to help her grow as the doctor was concerned that her weight gain and growth has been slow since 12 months. There were other indicators such as constipation follwed by very sloppy poos. I feel pretty devastated that I have been making her sick through lack of action.

There could be for to it for your ds than an egg allergy that he'll probably grow out of. Definitely get him checked out and get advice from a dietician.

My dd didn't have an adverse reaction to the MMR though.
