Dairy, rice, wheat and soy allergy

Zozo91 · 22/06/2024 06:54

My LO is 11 months now and has allergies/intolerances to multiple food groups. Dairy, rice, wheat and soya are what we have eliminated so far and we have seen an improvement. However he still has nights where he's constantly rolling around, crying in pain and very gassy, still having eczema flare ups. I am really struggling with what to feed him as all 'free from' items not containing dairy or wheat use rice as an alternative, so no good to us. At home we cook meat and veg, no additives, keep it simple. He loves scrambled egg also. However I'm finding it so hard to feed him while we're out. He's outgrown the basic fruit and veg pouches and all the meal pouches contain something he can't have, can't offer sandwiches, pasta, any of the usual easy on the go meals and snacks. I feel so guilty with his birthday coming up as I can't seem to find any cake recipes that don't contain one of the ingredients he can't have. Urgent dietitian referral has gone in after months of GP appointments, no appointments until October 1st and would like some help/support before then from anyone who is going through the same thing
Thank you

No real advice but we’re in the same boat and it’s rough! Finally had a phone appointment with the dietitian though this week and felt like we have finally made some progress

Zozo91 · 22/06/2024 07:05

How old is your LO and what food do you think is causing it? What are his symptoms?
I'm glad you feel better after the appointment, I'm worried that even after the appointment I'll still feel at a loss. The older he's getting the harder it is, he loves food and he's starting to get so upset when people eat in front of him and he can't have any of it

Try looking at dairy and gluten free recipes for things like cake. If he can have egg, it’s usually just a case of finding an alternative four a different milk or dairy substitute. You will have to play around with suitable options

You could also try American style pancakes. I make mini ones and take out and about for Ds who also has allergy restrictions. You can make very basic baby pancakes with just egg and banana if you like.

Gluten free oats are your friend if he can have. Can blitz as a flour type also for things like pancakes

for buy convenient foods out as he grows. Chips usually ok. Crisps. Fruit ( can buy those pre cut pots in many cafes/ shops). Sorbet instead of ice cream or ice lollies.

Can you try a few more free from breads or pasta?

For his age, I would also get a kids hot food thermos. You can then easily take food with you sometimes. Even restaurants won’t mind for like under 3 years if you just say he has lots of allergies. Then can take stuff he likes

I would get a private allergy blood test if you can. We got one as standard where we live, but I understand it’s not that easy in uk. It’s easy as blood test and results within a week.

It’s really helped as we could see exactly what Ds was and wasn’t allergic to, especially even non food items like grass, pollen, dust so we could adapt and medicate as needed. Ie we were thinking he constantly had a bad cold in spring and he had time off nursery ‘ill’, but it’s just bad hay fever, which we now have prescribed medication for.

If it’s helps. Ocado has lots of gluten free and rice free pasta options. Made with just chickpea flour or lentil or green pea.

This brand is on Ocado. Plus several others. Little pasta organics, profusion, and mr organic (they even do rice alternatives)

In the same boat. My daughter is 8.5 months. She's allergic to dairy, egg, wheat, peas and I suspect all other legumes and this morning had vomiting and diarrhea after coconut yoghurt. I have many other suspect foods from how she has reacted through my breast milk. I don't have many safe foods for her currently so she's having the same things most days. It's awful and I never thought I'd be in this boat so I really sympathise. If you have a local health food shop they usually have tonnes of alternative foods. I've seen buckwheat pasta and corn based products, egg noodles etc. hopefully he'll grow out of them soon. I'm praying for that but my little one has such an irritated tummy at the moment nothing is working for us :(

Thank you for all your advice and tips.
I was using rolled oats to make banana pancakes for him, but he seemed to be reacting to them, then I realised they weren't gluten free, that's when we started gluten free also. I can only find gluten free porridge oats, is that the same thing as the rolled oats? Can I blend them down?
We have tried loads of bread, eventually we found one that was gluten and rice free, but he was still so unwell off it. I persevered hoping after a few goes he might settle because it made life so much easier being able to give him toast and sandwich but it was definitely not agreeing with him. After that I'm too scared to try a new one at the minute as I work 12 hour shifts and sometimes nights and he is up every hour for at least 20 minutes when he's eaten something he can't manage and it just makes life so hard for us all

It's so hard isn't it. He has also reacted to carrots, sweet potato and corn, I just couldn't fit everything in the title of the post 🙈 we're stuck between not wanting to upset his stomach and skin at the minute but also the guilt of feeding him barely any new foods and feeling like he's not getting to try anything new or exciting.

I don't understand why this is happening and I just really hope it gets better soon and they grow out of them 🤞

A carved watermelon cake is great for birthdays. If you vary supermarket it can help. M&S uses loads of rice flour but Waitrose less so. I’m not sure about wheat though as it is not something we avoid.

Caspianberg · 23/06/2024 06:07

You can buy gluten free oats and blend, but they will turn into more of a fine oatmeal than actual flour. That’s fine for most things like pancakes.

But for ease I would buy some actual gluten free oat flour to try. Try shipton mill, they have a good variety of gluten free options, including potato flour. So maybe get a few to try over the next few weeks.

If there’s something you do know he can eat ie mash potato, make and freeze in small portions so you have small amounts of convenient food

You can buy wooden birthday candle rings or trains or similar if you want to avoid food this year.

My daughter has 20 food allergies! Can I recommend the allergy free baby and toddler recipe book and the following book the family cook book.

Readjust what you class as food. We gave her some weird combinations but very tasty. Pea purée on toast with bacon instead of pizza for example

Cornflour is gluten free we have used it in cakes and stuff as my bil is gluten free which makes feeding him and my daughter the same foods a challenge!
