Cmpa breastfeeding

Hey guys,
My daughter is 7 weeks old and was combination fed, but is on Neocate since Tuesday being trialled for CMPA. I haven’t breastfed her since then (have been pumping) . Any idea on how long I need to be dairy free before I can breast feed her again? I don’t want to upset her stomach if she does begin to make progress.

8h is all you need to have cleared the dairy and soya from your breastmilk. It will make 4-6 weeks for babies gut to heal so you might still have symptoms due to that but there is absolutely no reason to have a break in breastfeeding to clear dairy proteins from your milk

That’s fantastic thanks so much. I miss feeding my baby so much the guilt of potentially upsetting her further was stopping me from feeding her , so that’s so reassuring thank you!!

D's was intolerant rather than allergic but I found that giving up dairy resulted in a different child within 24 hours
I breastfed for 2years. I'm veggie to I was VERY skinny... Then we weaned at 2 and I ate all the cheesecake that I'd been deprived of. Again and again. I'm still eating deprivation cheesecake, chocolate and cheese. He's 12...

Be careful about going too long without feeding her, you really don't want your milk to dry up. Breastfeeding is the best thing you can do for a CMPA baby as the formula is SO highly processed. I would definitely keep BF but just ensure you eat no dairy. (If she still has symptoms try cutting out soya too.)

For me it literally made a difference within 6 hours. I never stopped BF or took a break from it.

Yep, as previous posters have said, no need to stop breastfeeding! I'm just over a week into going dairy and soya free myself. I initially started off pumping and dumping, but it became too difficult to keep up with and I was concerned about losing my supply. Discussed the situation with a fabulous IBCLC and she said the best thing to do is to keep breastfeeding, no need to pump and dump at all! Best of luck to you and your little one - I hope you see improvements soon.

How are you both tonight @Kilminchy123?

Kilminchy123 · 23/04/2024 05:50

Thanks so much everyone for your replies much appreciated! I have returned to breastfeeding her dairy free so I’m delighted! She has been on Neocate a week and unfortunately we haven’t seen any success, she has been better since returning to breastfeeding but we do still offer bottles as we have from the start. I brought her to Paeds over the weekend and they said it’s silent reflux and offered medication for same which has seemed to help a little bit! So am a bit rageing I have to stay on the 6 week trial of the formula as I’m not confident it’s CMPA as I see many people have success very very quickly and a week in we still have a lot of the symptoms. Maybe it just takes time. . So just offering the breast as much as I can and trying to up my supply (she is 7 weeks) is it too late??

Your supply will increase again. I’m surprised they told you to stop feeding. I had to ask for the formula with my second just to top her up a bit.

CadyEastman · 23/04/2024 06:35

You'll find it easier to to return to BFing if you have some RL support. Have a look here.

Superscientist · 23/04/2024 09:21

If you aren't thickening the neocate that will be responsible for the silent reflux. The amino acid formulas are very thin and can trigger reflux even in babies which previously didn't have reflux

7 weeks isn't too late to up your supply but realistically you want to be breastfeeding first and then using formula. The way to make more milk is to have baby drink more milk. Over night feeds are best for supply. It might be worth seeing if you infant feeding team has any breastfeeding clinics or groups for some face to face peer support

Are you soya free too? Half of babies react to both. If you want to check for allergies in the shortest time frame cut out both then test both after 6 weeks dairy first.

It took until 15 months to get my daughter symptom free for allergies as she has multiple allergies but we did have improvements along the way. It's 6 weeks for a reason that's the time frame for the gut to heal you can see improvements earlier than that but some babies do need weeks for the gut to get better. X
